How to remove 30yr old paint without damaging the details?

Hi

looking to repurpose this old lamp, want to remove the paint back to bare wood, but don’t want to lose the detailing. Will paint remover do this without the need for sanding?

Yes, but you will need some 0000 steel wool, a paint scraper, an old toothbrush, and to avoid being clumsy, particularly with the with scraper. Slainte.

PS. I thought I'd better add you'll also need some rubber gloves or gauntlets, preferably ones that go just about up to your elbow, and able to withstand the types of chemicals used in paint strippers, e.g., this type, or similar. Protective goggles and a boiler suit are good too.

Not sure yet, which is why I want to get back to the wood and see what I’m playing with.

I've found it useful to have a bucket of water at the ready and a rag as I usually splash a drop on my arm.

Hi

now I’m confused. Used the bio strip paint remover and got rid of 2-3 coats of grey paint, only to find a glossy cracked white layer that does not react to the paint stripper? Pics attached. The base is definitely wood, so not sure what this is? The stripper I’m using is water based so not as strong, but you would still expect some sort of reaction?

any suggestions?

Thought this would damage the wood underneath? depending on the wood thinking of clear coating after. Assuming of course it is wood....

It is a slight risk, but as long as you are careful it should be ok, it may be that once you have softened the pain and let it cool again it is more easy to strip off with stripper
