The easiest way to hold a pattern in place is to use an artists removable spray adhesive (available from all good stationers :) ). Spray the back of your pattern, let it go tacky for a few seconds, then apply it to the wood. It will peel away quite easily when you want to remove it.

Some scrollers like to place low-tack masking tape over their wood before applying the pattern. The idea is that the lubricants which prevent the masking tape from adhering to itself in the roll will lubricate the blade as it cuts, thereby extending the life of the blade. If you cover your work with masking tape beforehand, it doesn't matter if the spray adhesive you use is removable or permanent.

Whichever spray you choose, remember to invert the can after each use and spray it to clear any remaining adhesive from the nozzle. This will extend the life of your spray can considerably.

Looks like I will try the tape idea and see how I manage. If I have any more problems I will be back with more questions. Thanks to everyone for the answers
