As for the North/South thing, that is why the £43k figure suprised me so much. While that would be seen as quite a high wage up here in the industrial wastelands, achievable only by the very elite such as barristers, surgeons, and cabinetmakers, surely down in the soft south everyone earns that much...

Definitely not, as a company owner, I'm afraid I earn very little once the accounts are done.

Erm, have you looked at mortality statistics against income? Sorry to rain on your parade, but they show a very high correlation and suggest that indeed money can extend your life quite considerably. Across the UK low incomes and early death are associated highly with Scotland while older age is seen in the more affluent South. Start going outside the UK to worldwide and look at lifespan and relative poverty and the correlation is even more striking.

Noe only does money increase your expected lifespan, it also makes that lifespan more bearable. We have not quite achieved immortality yet, but we are working on it!
