How many of us shave in the 'old-fashioned' way.

I recently changed to DE shaving as my usual 5 blade rip off blades started to leave my face red and rashy.

Bought a German razor through advice on a shaving forum and must say it's been great so far. Best bit is the blades cost way less than the 5 blade jobbies.

I use both twin edge and wilkinson sword Quattro. I have to use the latter for shaving my head- on the few times I have tried with the twin edge it is a bit "bleedy"! So I use that on my face where I can see what I am doing properly.

On the Quattro, I get 3 or 4 head shaved from a blade which is a week. At a couple of quid (when on offer or in bulk) a pop I don't think it is too bad. It does clog easily though- that is why I have had to use the twin ended a few times when I have left it an extra day.

I think I am running close to needing a 'kopf-rasur'. My hair get thinner by the day, and it's beginning to go 'wispy'. I refuse to do a 'comb-over', as I don't smoke Hamlets any more! :D

I have a steaming hot bath every night, and shave in it twice a week, but.....

I treat myself and go for the full on "turkish treatment" at "zero" the barber. Best open blade shave EVER, hot towels, nose waxing, ears de haired using meths and a flame, eyebrows thinned out...the works

... that sounds like the dogs danglies.

Interesting.

I've been using a safety razor since I was a slip of a lad, so that's (cough harrumph) years. Don't really feel 'clean' unless I've had a proper shave in the morning. I did use an electric shaver for a bit when I was younger, but always seemed to end up feeling stubbly, however hard I worked at it.

Couple of years ago, supplies of proper shaving soap started to become rather erratic in Boots, so in a grump I ordered some from George Trumper over the interweb. Great stuff - lovely wooden bowl, and a soap refill lasts for months, not the weeks the Boots ones did. Not cheap at £10 a refill, but I get about four months out of one, so overall cost is not much more. Their deodorants are even better - an £8 bottle lasts me six months used every day, against the old Boots ones that cost £1-50 and lasted about a week. So it's 'posh'? Well....I can live with that!

I got disillusioned with the price of multi blade cartridge razors a while ago stuck with Gillette Sensor twin blades which were a reasonable shave at not too painful a price. I then tried a DE razor about 5 months ago and was an instant convert. I bought a reasonable quality DE razor for about £20 and decent razor blades bought in bulk from the internet work out at anywhere between 10 and 25 pence each and last two or three shaves. The reduction in cost is just insane and the shaving is just as good as I got with a Wilkinsonette Excell Sensor Mach 53 bladed razor. Less irritation as well.

I can remember having to break the ice from around the taps, get a candle going on the pipes, and then shave cold, using a Government Issue, Bakelite DE Safety Razor.

I have used a de safety razor, complete with soap bowl and brush most of my life, and like cheshirecappie I like G Trumpers soap,it lasts forever. I read recently that traditional wet shaving is making a bit of a come back!, probably something to do with the amazingly high prices of these multi blade razors.

That's close to my definition of hell!

When I was a student, got back to digs after xmas hols to find the toilet completely frozen and stalactites nearly 2 foot long hanging from the shower.

That would be around 1963 I reckon... The year there was 1/4" thick ice on both sides of the bathroom window!

When I do shave it is and always has been with a safety razor. I do have an old cut throat with pearl handles but it needs sharpening ( let's not go there [-X ), Come to think of it that wouldn't be a bad idea, it would stop the ladies borrowing mine.

Yup, I converted to DE shaving a couple of years back after years with Mach3/4/5 whatever. I was tempted by a thread on a hifi forum I frequent and the rest is history.

I use Japanese Feather blades which are incredible with an Edwin JaggerEJ87 safety razor. I love Mitchells Wool Fat soap and a traditional badger hair brush. It took a little while to get the technique correct but No it is second nature and I would not go back to cans of foam and multiblades.

I forsee the four yorkshireman sketch on the horizon..."o course we 'ad it tough". There were 156 o' us livin' in t' shoebox in middle o' motorway. Cardboard box? Aye. You were lucky.

I take it that the "safety" razor is only relative to the cut throat type? The advantage of the latest few evolutions at least is that they seem to prevent you knocking yourself, even if you move the razor in the direction of the blades.

Where do people but the better blades for them from? I have only used the boots ones but am aware that at one time at least, fake razor blades were very common. Is that still the case?

I've nicked myself on most forms of razor, at one time or another, sometimes quite badly. Also there's an annoying mole that I tend to slice occasionally. I have never cut myself with a straight razor though; presumably because I was always aware of the likelihood; and always took special care. As I am not likely to travel by air again, maybe I should go back to a straight razor, which these days I am told, would be confiscated at airport terminals.

Have a look here http://connaughtshaving.com/razorblades.html and here http://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/shav ... razors.php Quite a few others around too but be warned, it's another slippery slope ! :D
