8 yrs ago we had our last snow, yes truly, about an inch of it, but locally a whole generation of drivers had never driven on it. The bus service was cancelled!

Shortly after Prescott promised a 'transport revolution', and asked to be judged on it, they cut our bus service!
Now, with a reduced service the council have installed lots and lots of lovely new bus shelters all over the place. Pass!
Oh, and closed the nearest post office! And they want us to use less petrol?

I see Tewkesbury is again awash Roger, something, I fear the people will have to get used to, despite all Prescott's fine words.
The Severn owes its origins to melt water from the glacial plateau during the last ice age and drains a large area, but man has tried to tame the river.
Over the years we have drained its wetlands, straightened its bends, dredged it and tried to turn it into a drain.
Farmers have improved drainage from their fields and vast areas have been covered in concrete and tarmac. The result is that water that once took days to reach the river now does it in hours or minutes!
Winters are now wetter than they used to be and the river can no longer handle the change, left to its own devices it would handle the increased flow by widening its channel, the one thing we have stopped.
Germany tried all the same tactics with the Rhine, the result was massive flooding in Holland and Belgium. Germany is rectifying the mistakes by returning to the river its flood plain and wetlands, even razing properties on the plain.
My nearest river is the Teifi, and it breaks its banks with great frequency, the difference is that the river has never been tamed. In the 10 miles between Cardigan and New Castle Emlyn there is only one structure on the flood plain, a saw mill, and when the floods are bad people down stream bring out their boats to gather the harvest. One woman I know has even purchased a wood burning stove to take advantage of the bounty!
The flood plain is currently under water and some roads impassable, and it is not even front page news in our local paper.
Some time ago a planning authority in Norfolk? refused planning consent on a flood plain based on advise from the NRA, only to be overruled by Prescott, and this despite insurance companies saying that they will not offer cover.
Here endeth the first lesson!

Roy.
