It was finally flat and quite shiny as well. :wink:

The wings still have some shallow scratches but at least now level with the rest of the frogs face.

Did the underside whilst it was out and I had a little energy left, flat with some deep scratches;

Re-attached the lever by;
1, inserting the rivet into the hole.
2, Rested the disc side of the lever on top of one jaw of the engineers vice, making sure the disc is not on the vice jaw but only the lever arm where it supports the rivet.
3, Gently tapped the rivet first in the center to spread it to fill the hole and to distribute outwards.
4, Peened it by tapping some 40 or so times.
5, I was concerned it might bind the lateral movement if I hit too hard, happily it didn't and it moves freely as before.

All done and I begin to look a little closer at the "fantastic original paint" and consider, could I re-paint it and is this going to become my very first plane restoration? :? :?

You don't have to get all the scratches out...after all, good machining bears the marks of the mill or grinder but hell...you only live once!

But now you have to sort the paint out...it isn't a "used original finish" anymore so I'd go for cold Japanning if I were you.

Thanks for this post, it will be a good reference for anyone else is wondering how to do something similar.

You ended up with a nice finish!

Thanks for all those people out there who had the inclination to post and PM me on this, my first project.

Hopefully others will find this useful in the future and not be so daunted, stepping into the unknown.

I was surprised on the sheer amount of posts about planes, irons, comparisons, fettling, tweaking and the like, but couldn't find anything pertaining to the face of the frog.

I assume having a flat face on the entire frog can only do good, must be better than how it was before.

The red tinge at the base of the frog in the last photo is the reflection of my red T-shirt :lol:

Good luck to you if you are reading this with the intention of following it, feel welcome to PM me and I'll do my best to help.

Here's a quickie for those who like their puddings..........

Standard Record 2-3/8 blade, Hock 2-5/8 iron (chipbreaker), sharpened just for your pleasure. :D
