If I have a particular piece of software installed on my windows xp/2 computer can I tell if it is causing other software programs to run slow because it is installed?

Is there a page in windows that tells me at what speed everything is running at and then if I uninstall a particular program then see what speed the PC runs at?

Can I install a software program to a usb portable harddrive and run the program from this when needed and avoid the problems that might be happening above?

Bring up the Windows Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and switch to the Processes tab. Click the CPU column header twice which will sort the entries by CPU usage descending. That will show you which progs are chewing your processor time.

If, however, it is disk access which is the bottleneck, then I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with the answer to that one.
