How are these feet made?

How can these be made without a lathe? Any ideas?

Also where can you buy the rubber inserts?

I suspect you would need to replace the lathe with patience! Make a round blank, rough-cut then finished fixed in a power drill with abrasives, then forstner for the recess? Or find a local mate with a lathe. I guess the grain wants to run along the axis, if you get me.

You could maybe bore out the blank first, on a drill press, using a machinists' vice to hold it safely, drilling with a forstner bit. Attach a bolt through the bottom to put the blank in a drill, mounted in a horizontal cradle.

Don't laugh... :mrgreen: That was my first lathe, using a Stanley Bridges drill and a cradle.

I thought it would be a pain The round section isnt too much of a problem as I can use a router and a jig but its the whole in the middle I cant work out. I have nothing to drill down accurately enough all the way down a long length and not sure how I could hold a short length down whilst I drill through with a forstner bit...

I don't know if they come in various sizes and colours. I would think so. If you want the 'ivory' colour, I should look at plastic feet.
I have some small, black rubber ones here, but they wouldn't be big enough, being less than 18mm diameter.

it just struck me that the insert in that foot looks suspiciously like a common or garden door-stop, that's been sheathed in timber.
I reckon that would work as a foot. If a door stop is too long, then they are usually made of a fairly workable rubber, or plastic, and I think with patience you could saw through an shorten it.

Bore the recess for the rubber foot out with a forstner bit first, then use a hole saw to cut the outside bit.

The down side is that if you have a lot to make the will be a lot of sanding.

But you could then put a bit of threaded rod through them with a nut each side and put them in a drill at a slow speed.

I thought this, but the other way round as your way you would find it hard getting the hole saw spot on.
I think this is going to have to be the way until such time as I find a lathe.
