A bit of fun for a Friday. A load of larch was delivered and we started with the base. The T&G boards were held temporarily underneath whilst a circle was routed out to 1.75m diameter

The boarding was pre machined but a housing was needed to fit over the base so this was done on the RAS

The boards were placed around the base and pulled in with some large ratchet straps.

You can see the metal straps holding it together here

The heating is done by woodburner which you can see here.

Excuse my ignorance Jon but what keeps the water in? Is it just a tight fit like a barrel or are the planks glued together? You can tell I know nothing about hot tubs. (I can tell you all about gazebos to cover them)

Barrels are not watertight because they are tight, it is the moisture which swells the oak thus sealing the already tight joints, let one dry out and it will fall apart.

Ooo... very cool!

I'll be going incognito :-" when following this project ... otherwise SWIMBO will want one!

I imagine it'll be like floating a strip planked boat which sinks initially until all the planking expands... but the opposite if you catch my drift

Thanks for the interest the parts were purchased from logosol along with the timber to go with it see here http://www.logosol.com/store/uk/index.p ... ksbad.html

The idea is as has already been said that the water expands the joints and makes it all tight and leak free.

Had a few bits to finish of in the workshop some galvanised support brackets were coach screwed to the sides to take the seating and the burner was bolted to the side of the tub.

A guard was made for the woodburner and in this pic you can see the finished seating as well

Filling started and there were a few leaks from the bottom but only slight. As the cold water went in it kept the beers cold.

It took about 3 hours to fill and get to 35 degrees.

A bit of over exuberant use of the wood burner meant the water got up to a toasty 48 degrees. Overnight a spare sheet of celotox insulation was put over and it was still very hot in the morning. Leaks are now a minimum about 10mm of depth lost over night.

Overall a fun project and another one has been ordered today for a mate.

Cheers
