Homemade Kolrosing Knife

ive recently got into greenwood spoon carving (amd having been a woodturner for over 20 yrs now will never take symmetry for granted again!). Anyway, always one to run before I can walk, I’m playing with some ideas to decorate and embellish the finished spoon - kolroising is a great technique that sort of tattoos the design in by incising, rubbing in pigment and then burnishing the incision to capture the pigment. To do this I made a bespoke knife for the purpose and thought I’d share here - quite pleased with the outcome and seems to work very nicely.

Interesting process and a nice tool. The results look similar to wood burning cn achieve except you have the option of colours for the lines.

Indeed. I think there is something to be said for the traditional dimension here - I.e. without power but yes, it is possible to add lots of different options for the pigment to give different colours / tones - I’ve heard of finely ground coffee, cinimon and charcoal all being used and sure there will be other options too.

No - just protection for when not in use.

Not my work but this is the sort of idea. Obviously only limited buy imagination (and also no need to limit to spoons as could enhance all sorts of project id think.)

Sure. I use 6mm HSS and rough shape with flap wheel on angle grinder before going through the grits on diamond / Waterstones finishing with 14,000 for very sharp edge. I go for approx 30 ish degree bevel rather than anything finer as you actually want to separate the fibres to allow the pigment to get in before burnishing to seal it in.
