Hi All
When I got my big pile of poplar I decided to have a go at spalting some. So having picked three logs, I placed them in the compost bin and left them.
Three months on and I've pulled the first log out (or should I say got some one else to pull the log out after finding a HUGE 8-[ Arachnid sitting on them)
This was the result, its 3 1/2 inch wide and 4 1/2 inch high:
and
I'm happy with the spalting, and it seems to be progressing well. I noted that some of the wood had turn red/pink in places, sadly this was at the end I'd fastened the face plate too so lost a lot of it.
I think I need some more practice for the inside as I'm not happy with the finish. Tried with the bowl gouge but couldn't get it presented right. Ended up using the scraper, but this was on the limit of depth.
Would I be right in thinking that the grind has to be more swept back, like a finger nail grind?
