I find there are a lot of "after the horse has bolted solutions" here such as cameras and smart water. I personally prefer obvious security such as an alarm and overt CCTV to put people off. Make your house less attractive to burgle than someone else's. I also have a safe with valuables in it.

I don't think for a moment that Smartwater is only an "after the horse has bolted" solution, nor indeed are any cameras. No one knows what is going to put anyone off - ultimately you could spend several thousand quid and the toerag be put off by the jack russel three doors down barking and drawing people's attention. Who knows? Why would an alarm deter anyone? Around here they'd have your stuff and be ten miles away before the police turned up, if they turned up at all. The police in most instances (here at least) know exactly who's doing the burgling and also know there's no point in turning up to catch them. When my shop was burgled years ago, the guy who did was twenty five with five children and had been inside five times for housebreaking and theft from vehicles. The week he was done for mine he was done for another eighty six burglaries as well. He saw my alarm.
My friend (a licencee) had some advice from the local copper - he told him if he came across the thieves on his property again to get a few of is friends (who lived within 100 yards), bundle the thieves into his landrover, take the up on the moor in the middle of the night and turn them out after beating the holy crepe out of them. He said obviously don't quote me on that one, but I can assure that the police will not be remotely interested on the off chance that the offence gets reported.

Thanks for the advice!

An alarm installer called on Saturday and should be emailing me a quote on Monday. I think he's going to be expensive (suggested it would cost £700-800 to fit two cameras) but at least I've made a start on it.

Our electrician has done almost all of the alarm 1st fix, though we forgot to run a PIR cable up to the rear bedroom which can be accessed from the garden. It's an easy job for the installer - six PIR's, one door contact, one keypad, an external siren and the alarm box. The electrician has done all the hard work for them.

£700 - £800 is expensive to fit 2 cameras, as your house is not yest finished, it would be easy enough for you to run cables and fit these yourself.

We bought an 8 camera system from HDCCTV they all run off Ethernet cables, it was dead simple to install.

Hi we have a new house that was built next door they got burgled several times wilt it was being built so they got an alarm fitted it has gone a lot of times but no one bats a eyelid it rings for about 15 minutes then resets we used to go and have a look but we don't bother any more and nor does any one else.
A few years ago I worked on a site we had compound with all the expensive stuff in got burgled when police came they said the alarm had gone a few times they came and checked no one there then it went of again checked no one there this happened four times the then stopped responding they must have been watching to see if they come when they stopped coming they broke in and cleaned us out .

We wanted to set up a camera system so we contacted a firm selling security kit. The one thing that stands out in my mind from the conversation is you can't get a camera that will cover a large area and read car numbers as well. You need a separate camera for each purpose because the definition of one scanning a large area is not good enough to give detail. Multiple cameras (hidden) are a good idea anyway as someone already said, because they can be disabled. I read that they can be disabled using a laser pointer, I think I read that on this forum.

I also read about a lady who called the police to report intruders and was met with a very lax response- until she said something like ' never mind, my husband is going after them with his shotgun'. The police soon arrived.

I did that with a nuisance dog some years ago - I rung the police and asked them to get it off my property (it was known to them). They said it's not our problem and I said OK I'll shoot it. I had legally held guns at the time. I was miles from anywhere and it took them about four minutes to turn up. :lol:
