Today I decided to have a go at a slice taken off of a holly log I was given a couple of months ago, the log has been down quite some time, the barks rotted off and the wood discolored but its still rock hard. Its nice to turn something so hard after all the sycamore I've been doing and not have to deal with tear out and get a nice smooth finish off the tool :) . There was a small crack near the opening,so I decided to enlarge the hole beyond it and make a lid from the normally wasted bit left in the chuck.

Its finished with hard wax and is 5 1/2" tall. Your comments appreciated

I think it's terrific. But if I were super critical, I would have liked the lid to have followed the curve of the top, just a discernable line around the top.
But that's just nitpicking. Lovely Job =D> =D> =D> =D>

yet another cracker JT, hard to imagine this is only 5" tall, looks huge. I will have to agree about the lid though, nevertheless its brilliant..

Worth the effort Johnny, can see why you went for the lid on the slightly oversize opening. Would go along with John. B about the lid blend line.

hi jt
the main vase has a great flow to the curve until just before the base when it looks like it goes slightly out (might be just the pic) for me the lid doesnt work and unless the holly was dry it wont stay fitting for long anyway.
how wet was it? and how thin is it?
are you sure its holly? it doesnt look like any i've ever seen.

i actually thought this too, i thought holly was a cream colour :?:

Will readily discolour if left to dry out slowly;

Thanks for replies, the lid was an afterthought when I had to enlarge the hole and didn't like it :lol: .
George its about 5mm thick, the curve doesn't come out,its definately holly it was retrieved for me from a private woods were it had been laying around on the damp floor amongst the leaves, the colour is due to decay. Its not bone dry but not soaking wet.

cheers JT

What you could do is wait for it to dryy thoroughly and then make a clollar with a narrow hole from a contrasting wood. General shape etc is good and worth soerting out the top

Pete

I agree with the others - I really like the shape of the vase but I'm not convinced about the lid. I don't think it's needed.

As for the colour of holly - here's another pic of just how different it can get from the normal pale, uniform cream
