So ot round to turning Mushrooms and was having fun even when
the cap went on another one... :lol:
I know it looks more like a toadstool...lol but it was getting there

Then all of a sudden my lathe went thud thud and started to shake
Knocked it of and what I feared was right the belt had gone

Booo hooo that's me out till I get another belt..
I thought it would last a bit longer but it is my own fault should have
replaced it when I got the lathe as it was looking a bit ropey.
Any way here is one I made before it went..

Better get out and get that belt otherwise withdrawal symptoms will creep in. In the mean time think up designs of all them projects you want to make :lol:

Thanks Dalboy & Jenx managed to get it sorted yesterday. There
was a half turned mushroom when the belt went, finished it, so I have
Two so far....lol
One on the left new one, managed to keep two natural edges
top and bottom

I will be giving the 10" die X 9" long logs a go in a few days hope
they turn out
as friend would love them in his garden..Have some mushroom spores
off the net..was told you can get them to grow off wood if they are left
out in the damp...Should make for a large interesting mushroom
growing mushrooms, if it works.... :lol:

I got spares but not getting to do turning for good few days..
Have an old wardrobe my brother wants fixing...dumped in my shed...
Arrrrrrrrrrrrg...Sister wants her benches fixing...ect..ect.

But have been given a large lump of dark wood looks bit like mahogany.
It came out of the old Corn Exchange that was Bombed in Manchester,
apparently all the joists on the upper floor where made of the stuff.
Asked what happened to all the other wood and got a cold answer" it
was just dumped in to skips"
No idea where they tipped the skips..

Well will leave the wood till I can do it justice due to its drastic
history..

Me well I have Been stuck in shed fixing my bro's wardrobe, it is
finally out of the way..
Then got stuck looking for a car ended up with a Vauxhall opel Zafira,
We are happy with it..
So I am free to get on in the shed. Have moved the shop vac in..Bit big
might have to put it on a small platform with wood storage underneath.
Amazing how difficult it is to find time to do just what you want..& to top it all
people think just because you have a tool shed and retired you have
nothing better to do but jobs for them.....Will have to learn
how to say NO.!!...Lol
Mmm wonder if I can get round to practicing turning mushrooms, still
want to turn two big ones for friend...
:lol: Bought a small homemade lathe it looks like the motor came off
a washing machine it has..Well will take pic and post it...Hoping it will
come in handy & not another tool taking space...lol

Amazing how difficult it is to find time to do just what you want

What a 'truism' that certainly is :lol:
between turning, fishing, fly-tying, motorbike, guitars/mandolins/whistles, kids, house, work, dog, 'chums', etc etc.. I think we should ask for a day to be extended to about 40 hours each !
And if what I hear some retired fellas say is true ( and I suspect it really is ...) it gets even more difficult after 65 to find any time !

Keep us informed on the progress with the lathe ! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Here is the pics of the small bench lathe.
Think it could do with bigger chucks at both ends.
I got it to make pens during the winter months.. but it is to fast, needs
some sort of variable speed control..

Managed to turn another mushroom this morning. Got called in to take
wife round to see sister...Lol
So turning got cut short again. Was asked if I could make a mushroom
large enough to sit on...Perhaps they was pulling my leg...lol

Well got to turn a bowl for the first time..not finished yet & Ineed some
advice on chisels and finishing
I am trying to get the inside of the bowl flat but all I get is lines and an
uneven surface..Ignore the hole if possible...lol I bought the small blank
a while ago did not think the hole went all the way through..But as you can see it did.
Still ideal piece of mahogany to practice on.
Here is how I left it yesterday i put a bit of stain on to show the problem
with the finish

Today I did a bit more work on it and managed to get it fairly flat
but as you can see it is still far from finished.

Am I using the wrong chisel..Help...!
Only used a dark teak oil oil to show the faults in the turning.
What type of finish would you recommend..??

It looks as if you have 2 scew gouges, 2 round nose scrapers and a round carving gouge. I would not use the carving gouge if I were you because it isn't designed for the pressures of turning and it the wrong shape to do very much on a fast spinning bit of wood. At best it will catch and at worse, possibly break?

I think that if you want to do any successful type of turning then you will have to invest in a roughing gouge, spindle gouge and a parting tool to go along with the scews and scrapers that you have. High speed steel is the best type to go for because it will give you longer and better service than carbon steel. It will also help you to get a bowl gouge if you are going to turn any bowls of any size. You can turn smallish bowls perfectly well with a spindle gouge (duck John, I can hear the cries of oh no you can't) but a bowl gouge is much easier.

I forgot to say that you have done a sterling job with what you have! I remember the first lathe I had was a Wolf stick yer drill in this end and move the tail stock up the edge of the bench and pray it all don't finish up on the floor, but it got me hooked!! Good luck to you too!

Anyway, that is my tuppence worth and I am sure that there are a lot who will think differently, but I hope they won't take offence to this advice?

Thanks for the reply Jonzjob I have quite a few chisels but it was
these ones that got me to this stage of the bowl shape..I was getting
a nice curve on the inside with the large round nose & the large scew
gave the outside of the bowl its shape.
Will take a pic of other chisels to get the right tool for the right job..
Was surprised how quickly the shape of the bowl went wrong...lol
and how soft mahogany was.
P.s thanks for the compliment on the bowl, I still feel it is abysmal
first attempt...lol

Getting a flat bottom on a bowl is not easy at the best of times. You have done well to do what you have. As advised invest in a couple of decent tools and find out if there are any clubs bear you. Good place to get advice and see others working.

Maybe not the wrong tools but not necessarily the most appropriate or safest for the tasks you are attempting.

I would suggest that if you can run to it you get a copy ofWoodturning- A foundation Course It has a good description of basic turning tools and their normal uses, following the practical turning examples in the book should help avoid any accidents due to inappropriate tool use.

( Last time I went I stumbled in on their AGM so not the best of times...lol) Will
give them another go.
Book is on order and on way..
Tool will take a pic This after noon and if you could let me know What I am
missing.
Was conscious of safety Bodrighy I wear a face mask & kept a good grip
on the tools..I have one chisel hat looks like a small ice-cream scoop
I tried but it kept catching so I put it aside..Looked on the web and the only
name for the tool I could find was a Termite..Here is a pic of it

It is double sided and digs in the wood hard but that us just my lack of
experience I suspect.
One of the pics also shows the type of chuck I am using..
The Multistar duplex..Had my first go on this bowl found it a bit
hard to form a good dovetail for it to slot in to..Anyone know which
attachment for the chuck is the most versatile for making small
boxes...

I have never used one so I have no idea as to what they are like or how to use it, but someone will come up with the gen!!

I have to go and set up my new toy, arrived this lunch time, a Oneway Wolverine grinding jig 8) . I have always been OK about sparpening but I thought that I would spend a bit more of my kids inheretance. The continuation of the SKI adventure!!

I got the Phil Irons book a little while back and it is very good, but I do like a chalenge! It's in French!!! Well if I am going to TRY to show some French people the joys of turning in the New Year I thought that some turning French might help? :? :? :?

Edit :- Just read the bottom bit. As far as cutting the dovetail for my expanding chuck I do a slightly naughty, I suppose, and use a scew chisel as a scraper to form it. It works every time...

Wow it only cost me a quid at car boot...lol
No Idea how to sharpen it.
Just looked at the Wolverine grinding jig bit out of my
price range at the moment..lol Have seen a lot of home made
jigs that should get round to having a crack at but like you ok
sharping by hand.
You can't beat SKI'ing with the kids inheritance..
My wife loves learning other languages she even had a go
at Urdu Drove me mad listing to the lesson tapes..but hay I can say
my name and ask how mush or how many in Urdu..Thank god she
moved on to Spanish.
Ooo the joy when Le' salveger emigrated to France...Rustic nails and all..lol
Good to know you are out there showing them how to do it the
right way...

I use th skew as well for dovetails, I think a lot of us do.
The ring tool can be sharpened with a file or diamond a card. It is useful for getting wood out fast but it is a bit viscious if you aren't careful. Make sure you get the bevel on the wood first or you take chunks out.

Thanks for the tip.Was uneasy about it flying across the shed so
I must have got it right, but the bowl was on a bit of a gimbal ...lol
