The problem is that i cant remove it from my lathe without difficulty, i have a CL1 lathe and the spur used to come out easy, i would have a small adjustable on the headstock and one on the spur, then twist and its out.

These days though its harder to remove, when i try the same method the spur just rotates in the headstock and wont come out, ive now taken to putting an adjustable behind the spur and hitting the adjustable to get it out.

This cant be good long term especially being so close to the thread im worried about damaging that.
Is there any way of removing it so less chance of damage? maybe some grease on the the spur but this doesnt seem like a great idea for some reason.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Alie,
I think what you need (and I still need!) is what they call a thread proctor, those in the know on this forum replied to my similiar query the other week. (I play the role of the village fool on this forum :D )

Mornin'. and happy Easter to all.

Think your being a bit hard on yourself for what I've seen of your posts, Matt. Mind you if your into the ashes and flagellation bit you carry on.

Hi Alie, as Matt has said you need what they call a thread protector, which is a threaded collar which you put onto the spindle nose before inserting any MT drive. As said on the thread he mentioned they do cost a bit for what they are, the thread on your lathe is ¾” x 16TPI, compatible with a ¾” x 16tpi UNF nut. It would be possible to make a thread protector with a nut and washer the centre hole being small enough not to let the drives go through it. Use epoxy adhesive to fix the washer to the nut, then as you unscrew the nut it pushes the drive out of the spindle.

When you say the drive only rotates but won't come out, IME that is the sign of a good fit, so leave well alone.

When you say it rotates in the headstock do you mean it rotates when the headstock spindle doesn't?

yes when the lathe is stationary and i have adjustables holding the headstock and i am trying to remove the prong.

Alie,

Is the headstock spindle bored right though? :-k
I remove drive centre on my Perform using a bar thought the headstock, put the bar in the hole, grip centre with rag in right hand and tap the end of the bar with a hammer in the left hand, centre pops out, if it has been there a long time it might take a few taps.

Think the problem here is that it is a Record lathe, this has always been one of my pet hates with what is generally a pretty good machine. They all have solid spindles. ](*,)

All said in Jest Tam mind you the more I find out about turning the more questions I have! I'm trying to drip feed them onto the forum one at a time!

Best Regards

Matt

I think if you can borrow a hub puller that may do the trick.
I'm sure I've seen one that has three legs and a gripping type hook in the centre,,,
That aside, the reason its jammed, could be dirt in the spindle or on the drive centre, or maybe the drive centre has a poor taper.
When you get it removed, before you put anything in the spindle you must get a thread protector.

has the end of the drive centres morse taper been mushroomed from knocking it into wood with a metal hammer? i did this a few years ago and i got similar problems on a solid spindle poolewood lathe.
