Help with Identifying and valuing Woodwork Tools

I hope this is OK to ask on here ?

My Father in Law has recently passed away and left lots of woodworking tools in his Workshop. My Mother-in-law will be moving house now and so we need to sell many of the items. There are many many hand tools and power tools. Some of the power tools have been sold already.

We are at a bit of a loss how to value some of the older items. He was a wheelwright, Builder and Carpenter, so there is a wide range of things. I believe a lot of the wheelwright specific tools were sold a few moths back.


One thing we are struggling to gauge a value or interest on is an "old" lathe. There are lots of wooden handled lathe tools as well. Below are a coupe of pictures. I think they found some spare chucks today as well ?

Any help or advice would be most welcome.

That looks like a very nice Victorian treadle powered lathe. It's hard to tell without more pictures whether the treadle belongs with it or has been adapted from a sewing machine - it seems to have its own lighter weight frame where I may be able to read the name SINGER?

The working parts are probably fine; missing leather drive belts are easily available. It might be meant for wood, but the chuck suggests metalwork so it could be an earlier style without a slide rest to hold the cutting tool. They continued to be sold for amateur use.

The bad news is that judging by prices realised on eBay, I don't think it is especially valuable. There are not enough people who want something relatively bulky and heavy in their homes. I've seen similar ones sell for £20 to £100.

Hello Karlak, firstly welcome to UKW...I'm sure someone with the knowledge you are looking for will be along soon.

Your late Father in Law's lathe certainly looks like a solid lump of cast iron.

I have just purchased a lathe from another forum member (thank you Chrispy!). I know nothing about turning, but I am in need of turning chisels, perhaps you will let me know when you decide to sell them. I live near Leighton buzzard, work near Luton and I'm often in Bedford.

I know a bit more about other woodworking tools...be sure to post photos of them all. You would be surprised at the value of old tools...if they are the by the right maker and in good condition.

The smaller lighter frame underneath does have "singer" on it, but is unattached. Just stored under there. It certainly does look like a hefty lathe

My wife is currently sitting down and checking/ cataloging some wooden turning tools and wooden handled screwdrivers etc. I will try and post some pics up when we can.


There is a also electric wood planer/thickness-er that she has listed on Gumtree. My account doesn't let me link to urls, but it is a ELEKTRA BECKUM PLANER THICKNESSER. May be of interest to someone ?
