Im gonna get a couple of extra sets of Jaws for the Supernova chuck and would like peoples recomendations as to be honest i really dont have much of a clue.

Im gonna get a cole jaw set but im not sure of what other sort i need (if any)

Ive included a link to the ones available

http://www.asktools.co.uk/index1.html

I mainly do bowl turning with only the occasional non bowl items.

Sorry for the unhelpful nature of this post but im not sure what sets of jaws to get as theya ll seem to do what i need them to do (kinda).

thanks again!

Hard to say Alie, you will certainly be happy with cole jaws, sure takes the hassle out of finishing the feet of bowls :D (providing they are not too wide)
I have a set of pin jaws and find them really handy for small stuff but probably by no means necessary.

Coles jaws are really handy to finish the feet off, as johnnyt says, also Long Nose Jaw Set can be handy to give you room behind but are expensive, enjoy your purchase any way, if you have a quick look at my link a lot of the burrs were held in the coles to finish the bottom, also so was the zebrano square bowl

You might check out Toolpost at Didcott.
The web site is not brilliant but the bloke (Peter) is knowledgable and would not sell you something that was unsuitable

I think the stuff he sells will fit most chucks.

If you drive up there you could take the chuck with you.

I warn you though if you visit your wallet might take a hammering as he sells lots of pretty things.

No connection other than a satisfied customer

I use Axminster but I assume you can get similar for the Patriot. I have a set of small diameter jaws, I use a 1.25 inch forstner bit to drill a hole deep enough to mount the piece on the chuck. It saves a lot of time and holds quite well, well enough to form the outside of a bowl

I've also been considering new jaws. What size do most people use for larger bowls? I have 50mm but was thinking along the lines of 75mm for larger stuff? Make sense?

Buying new jaws really does depend on the type of work you do. I do a lot of large diameter work so I use the 130mm jaws quite a lot for gripping a large diameter spigot that I can turn into a foot for the bowl when I reverse it and keep the foot in proportion to the bowl. They also give a good hold for large work because of the greater diameter of gripping surface. The power grip jaws are also excellent if you start doing hollow forms. I now have 4 chucks and have the following jaws permanently mounted.
1. standard jaws
2. 130mm jaws set
3. colejaws that I have extended with mdf to 75cm diameter
4. Long nose jaws or power grip jaws

I rarely do small stuff when I do I usually use pin jaws or the standard jaws

Not sure what is available for SN but I have the following (in order) for my APTC chuck:

O'Donnell style jaws
Wood jaw plate carriers (can make cole jaws from MDF but also mount other finishing aids)
'Gripper' jaws for hollow form / end grain holding
Faceplate ring to mount longworth chuck (google for info) on.

I would also buy additional carrier jaws for each of the above to save hassle when changing.

As ever, I would be tempted to wait for the need before buying 'speculative' kit as each of the above will be £80 ish with carriers.

I have the SuperNova Deluxe and SuperNova 2 chucks with the following jaws:
PowerGrip,
Step,
Long Nose,
Cole

It all depends on the size of work you do as to what to recommend.
I use the PowerGrip and Step jaws the most but those are the ones I've had the longest and have got used to using.
For large bowls and for hollowing I'd always use the PowerGrip jaws.
The step jaws are more useful for smaller work but I rarely use the 2 inner steps.

The Cole jaws are sometimes useful but I don't often use them as I tend to use wooden friction/cup chucks.

Hi Alie,

Just to add my bit. I have the Axminster K10 and I have just the Standard "C" Jaws (grip 56mm, open into 63mm) and the "F" Jaws (grip 25mm, open into 35mm) I find I can do almost everything with these. How big do you intend to do work upto/what is your lathe capacity? I've turned 18" platters on my standard jaws!!

The other item I do have and would recommend is the jaw carriers. This means that changing the jaws is a case of simply opening the jaws up until they come out and inserting the other set. Saves messing around with fiddley little screws in the shavings!!

Hi Alfie,
I have been told that the "Fox FX4000R Woodturning Chuck Bowl Reversing Jaws" Ebay item 190326845474 £24.99 from Poolewood Machinery will fit the supanova chuck (if anybody knows any different please let me know) could be worth a look and see what other jaws they have.
Regards Chris.

I have found that, since I got a bigger lathe and was making things more than 8" diameter, that the jaws most often used on my Supernova/Patriot are the 75 mm bowl jaws and the 45 mm spigot jaws ... and the 130 mm jaws for the odd large platter ... haven't used the 50 mm jaws in a long time somehow ...
