I have done exactly the same to my piece of crap stanley no.4 (plastic handles, hence crap).
I managed to screw mine back in though, it is very hard to engage the thread but it is possible. I haven't managed to lock it in place yet though, it is tight enough to be usable but I have to be carefull when I raise/lower the blade. I plan to just carefully retap the thread then put the rod back in with a dab of locktite.
