Hi,

My name is Gareth and I live in North Wales. I have just ordered an Axminster AWFS18. I'm new to scrolling.

I am having a new workshop about the end of Feb - 16'x10' made of wood.

Does anyone know anywhere in North Wales (I live in Holywell) where I can get hold of birch plywood, hardwood and softwood at a reasonable price.

If anyone uses the AWFS18, I would really appreciate learning how you find it and if there are any problems that you have come across.

Gareth

Hi Gareth Happy new year to you and welcome to the forum.
Cant help on the wood. And suggest you read some of the previous posts on the forum .
Do search on AWFS18.
Take a look at insert not flush post it will interest you.

Geoff :)

Hi Gareth, .

I have the axminster like you and am a learner to sawing.
The main thing I like about this saw is the ability to slow down the speed when cutting thin wood also when I need to be extra careful, I use it all the time makes the saw very quiet and cuts vibration.
I have the blade holders from the Hegner with a big T key, I also removed the side pannel, this makes it a lot quicker changing blades or doing inside cuts.
Happy new year to you.and have fun scrolling......Geoff3.

Welcome :p As said the search function will be your friend as a few members have the model you have ordered. Take off the NVR switch, lose the hold down and plastic shield and put on some hegner quick release clamps and enjoy!

Hello,
I agree about the blade guard and the hold down thing. I too am considering removing them altogether.
The blade guard worked well when all I was doing was straight or random cuts, but now that I do colour line cutting it impedes my vision as the light reflects on it. So for fiddly work I lift it up and I wear safety glasses instead.
The hold down contraption is only useful as a very effective finger trap.
The insert is still an unresolved problem (see recent thread) in 2 counts: wood catching and blade catching and lifting it now that I have filed it (the insert) loose.
I haven't changed the blade fitting operation as yet. So far for my needs (puzzles) I don't find the sequence of actions complicated. The only tricky bit is positioning very thin blades in the clamps. I don't know if the Hegner system would make this fiddly task easier.
I haven't seen the point of mounting the NVR as described in the manual (use the PDF one by the way, see previous threads), it just sits on the table next to the machine.
Good luck.

Thank you everyone for welcoming me to the group :D :D

I looked at the quick release clamps and thought the price was extreme for what they are. I think I will try the lever home made one that Sawdust-johnny made first and see how that goes.

Has anyone else tried his design of clamp?

Take care,

Gareth

Hi Gareth

Welcome to the forum, I am sure you will find everyone very helpful. I live on Anglesey and have the sam problem attaining good wood. I have used Hobbies in Norflok, they have good wood but it can be a bit pricey. However the postage is kept to a minimum. I have got it from Ruthin I think in the past. I think the timber yard is Travis Perkins.
