rule of thumb is one year for every inch of thickness plus a year.

Indeed, that is the 'rule'
I for one don't think I have enough time left to muck about like that.

I am 59 years old, which equates according to me to a single plank 4 ft 11 inch following the thickness rule.

However SWMBO disagrees with this, and says I often equate to a pair of quite truncated pieces of wood, about 2' 5 1/2". Especially when I forget our anniversary.
