Would you replace a broken hammer handle with a new handle...???
Just got back from two tool shops and both did not stock any!!!.
I went to one who has been around for years and managed to get
an Ash Adze handle, wanted Hickory..But needs must. :lol:

So buy new or replace handle...???

Just voted replace handle. I've got two claw hammers that I know are more than forty years old and possibly might be older than me (I'm sixty), one still has the original handle and both still work fine :lol: In fact the re-handled one is the electric one :lol: :wink:

I'm rolling my own, thank you Actually, I have two axes and a bucketful of hammers waiting for handles, but I have made a good few handles for my striking tools.

But as they are cheep to buy at £1.65p I'm cheep like that.

If it was a special (say for a Jap hammer, where it ought to be oak) I'd make it, but generally I'd go into In-Excess in the town and get a hickory one for about 65p...so why make one? :wink: :roll: I seem to remember having this 'conversation' with Alf some years ago - Rob

my main hammer in the w/shop is a stanley antivibe so i wont be replacing the shaft on that! pin hammers a change shafts tho and my favorite hammer at work my 4lb ball Pein i change the shaft and have a spair at all times!! i am lost with out it

I have one that's over 40 years old. It's only had four new handles and three new heads.

I don't invest much money in hammers, £10 at the most for a stanley blue strike, I've got one thats over 5 years old and another thats nice and clean n shiny! Thats for the special hammer smacking jobs! :?

Sorry to label you wrong Doug B..The twang of leather is a total different
sound to the thud of rubber. So I'm told :lol: :lol:

no I dont do horseshoes!! Truck brake shoes tho and most other things to do with trucks and busses and I have some very nice BIG chisels to go with it and it makes you think twice befor you hit your hand with it!!

Depends on the quality of the head.

Further, if the head has an unusual eye shape, you might be forced to make the handle, since modern handles (even if available) don't always fit.

I would only go to that effort for a truly lovely head.

Then again, I've never broken a hammer handle.

The decision (for me) arises when I buy a broken hammer, or hammer head at a car boot.

I agree only if it is a good head.
Shows we on the forum are not into the throw away culture..
