Hammer pillar drill

Hello fellas,

I have been mulling over upgrading my pillar drill which is a small bench top Jet model.

I have been watching the ebay for a used floor standing Meddings or Fobco, given the general view that an older UK machine is better than any chiwanese clone.

Having said that, I noticed this machine on the Hammer site. It looks a bit like the Jet machine in the Axminster catalogue. It can't be a Hammer, made in Austria for that low price, can it?. I wonder if it is worth a punt?

I think the equivalent new Meddings machine is £1,200 + vat.

I read this thinking NO - a pillar drill with a hammer function - WHY???

Yes Allan, I have had my eye on that one. But as you say it is miles from here, 175 according to the map. The cost of driving there and back would seem prohibitive.

Pity as it looks quite a tidy machine for £150.

Can't you ask him if he will Pallet it - probably only cost about £65?

Hammer used to have a good name and that price looks good?

In my opinion i would not by Felder machinery .It's over priced and unreliable . Stick to manufacturers who deal with pillar drills !

I would give Russel a call at Felder Phone 01908 635385 and ask about the pillar drill I use Hammer machines and find them excellent seems like a good price to me is it made by them or made in china and rebadged

I may look at one sometime in the future

The Hammer looks exactly the same as my Draper (with the exception of a different shaped table), and I do mean exactly!
I would expect they are made in the same factory in the far east.
I am happy with mine, it weighs 70 kg and is no lightweight, no discernable play.

Fellas,

By way of an update, I spoke to Russell at Hammer this afternoon. He explained that the pillar drill machines were made for Hammer, to their specification by a third party.

Although, he did point out that some parts of the machine were made by Hammer. The table for example was machined at their factory.

He had a drill on display at the recent Harrogate show and sold a few there. I wonder if any members who went to the show could comment?

I think for £250 quid or thereabouts it seems good value, it looks a bit like a cross between a Jet / Draper/ Axy / SIP love machine mongrel to me, judging by the pictures here and there. :roll:

I can't imagine that the Felder Hammer stable would associate themselves with a poorly designed or made machine.

Dont waste good money by buying Felder ,get in touch with any of the secondhand machine specialists and they will put you on the right lines .

I have a Hammer sander and for the use I give it, it is an acceptable machine.

I know someone with a Hammer planer and spindle and they are not any better than the Rojek and similar but are alot more money and on the spindle there is not rise and fall lock, which is just daft.


However for £250.00 you probably will not go far wrong with this drill.
