I have some relatively new plastic guttering on the outbuilding. The problem is that expansion/contraction with heat makes it constantly get unfixed from one particular joint. It seems to me that the fixing hoops must be acting a bit like a ratchet mechanism..in that as the gutter passes (expands?) in one direction the hoops stop it from returning back to its' original position. Over time, this movement in the same direction makes one of the joints drip.

I've thought of bolting the gutter together at this joint but reckon that I'll just shift the problem elsewhere. Overall length (including joins) is 9 metres.
Any suggestions?

Roger

Check that you have installed all of it with the correct expansion gaps.
Can you modify the hoop so it does not grip to prove your idea

It's easy to install it without noticing that the joints have a scribed line to which the gutter sections must align. The "natural" thing to do would seem to be to butt the ends against the internal shoulders of the joints, but - as mentioned above - that does not allow for expansion/contraction. If you didn't install to the scribed lines initially, that'll be it.

Ray.
