Hi all,

Hope it's ok for me to post this. Please remove if Mods feel it should be.

I would like to offer 3 members (first come first served) a free day of woodturning tuition. Let me explain...

I have been a qualified joiner for over 10 years and set myself up in business as a woodturner at the end of 2006 to follow my passion. I moved into my own workshop in March last year. I have been demonstrating for 2 years but I would love to get into teaching/giving tuition.

Before I start charging people for tuition however, I would like to "practice" on a couple of people first and seeing as none of my family want to be taught I wondered if there was a couple of members of the forum might like to be my guinea pigs!?

I am fully insured for demonstrating and tuition and have plenty of woodturning experience. Please see my website to see some of my work.

Please post or PM me if interested.

Cheers,

Richard

You want to teach people for free?

YES PLEASE!

I'd love to help you :)
I'm so out of practice I need all the help I can get, and I might even be able to provide some feedback as someone who has trained people and has a part time teaching qualification...

Richard, would jump at the chance but for where I live, I must say thatr a very generous gesture no doubt you will de inundated with takers.
If the offer still stands in August I will jump at it   . Best of luck and every success. REgards Boysie

Richard,

As a new convert to the spinney things an offer like this cannot be refused, if I am helping you so much the better. 8)
Please add my name to the list.

wow richard, i was only admireing your website/work just last week.
as i only turn pens, you can add my name to the list please, i would be honoured.

If I could only wangle a trip to leicester I'd jump at the chance. Good luck with this Richard, hope it goes well.

Great idea Richard, what a way to get into the teaching bit, even better when teacher and pupils benefit. . Well done.

Very good idea Richard,
Getting feed back at the end of a coarse is essential .Everyone benefits.
I have Richard Raffan coming to my place for ten days and he is somebody worth watching when it comes to teaching.
I have been turning close to twenty years and giving classes for six months.
Very different skill needed for both.

In Ireland we have started a tutor chapter in the woodturners guild so we can all learn from each others experience.

I wish you the best with your new venture.

regards,

glenn

Excellent idea Richard. As Glenn has said it requires a different set of skills to teach. I've found it makes you think about how you turn as you have to be able to justify it to your students. Good luck.

Regards

Wow.. fantastic idea !
You have plenty volunteers already... depending on when you'd plan to do this Richard, I'd love to be on the 'reserves' list too.

Your work is lovely.... website's great !

In fact - all the 'Pro' lad's stuff is nothing short of utterly amazing... I guess like most, I look at their sites regularly and gaze on, in absolute amazement.
The more experienced amateur fella's stuff is running them close too... and its also fantastic to see the levels of improvement of the new guy's work as they learn...
Wish i'd taken this up years ago... the enjoyment from it rivals the fishing and the motorbikes... :D

Very best of luck with your endeavours Richard...
I'm sure you'll do extremely well 8) 8) 8) 8)

-- I do 'short courses' for Instrumentation Fitters for my company... no formal qualification for teaching or anything like that.. 1 or 2 days at max.. usually for groups of 2 - 6 delegates, .. I've no idea if I'm much good at it - they still let me loose to carry on.... if there was any way in which I could help you, don't hesitate to ask ... I may not have the answers, but If i could help you, I will  :D

Thank you all for your kind words. I must admit I was surprised (and a bit pleased ) at how quickly and how many people responded  :D . Thanks to everyone for your interest and support.

The first 3 takers were:

Paul L by PM (within seconds of my original post!!! )

Cambournepete (I have PM'd you but not sure if it went through as it has not appeared in my sent box, let me know!)

And:

Dave L.

If anyone drops out for any reason I have a long list of stand-ins.

I will PM each of the 3 members above to make arrangments and we WILL make sure there is a camera there to record and post updates on the forum.

Thanks again for all of your support both on the forum and via PM

 :D

Cheers,

Richard

My martial arts instructor used to call these volunteers 'victims of circumstances'. I will be having a few of them in about 3 weeks. I love teaching as much as I do turning.

What a cracking idea! Good luck to all involved. This forum is great for springing up positive ideas and sharing. I look forward to seeing the write up.

Richard,

This tuition offer you have made speaks volumes about your attitude towards the quality of your own work and it's value to future students. I wish you every success with your venture and hope you get as much enjoyment from seeing your students' success as they will themselves.
