it about 3ft tall and the thickness of my middle finger  no ready for milling yet. but dose any one know how fast these grow?? im guessing hundreads of years before it will be ready for making something?.

Had an elm in the hedge of our last house - it was about ten feet tall when we moved in, and was about 30 feet after 15 years. But still not much useable timber, I would have said.
The other problem with elms in England at least is the dreaded Dutch elm disease. Most of the ones round Milton Keynes would re-grow from suckers up to about 15 feet then the beetles would get them and they'd die off.
Still not sure why the one in our hedge survived; it did wilt a bit one summer, but recovered. Maybe I should have taken cuttings and breeder's rights :D

Its been a while since I last read it but there's a very detailed forestry commission guide to estimating tree age based on their size which used to be downloadable(forestry.gov.uk), have a dig around and you may well find it. It basically gives you details on the speed with which most native species mature and their annual increase in girth. If memory serves ash grows at around 1.5 times the speed of oak, and my rule of thumb for oak is that it grows at around 2m of girth per century.
In short, don't hold your breath

Edit: I've no idea why I was telling you about ash when you were asking about elm. I don't know how fast elm grows though I'm afraid...

time will tell i sopose then. im 20 now wonder what it will be like in another 40 years time :).

Probably big enough that you will have fond memories of playing with the kids in the shade under the tree and refuse to cut it down for sentimental values ;)

don't forget to post a pic when its finished and maybe some WIP pic

I had some boards from an elm which was about 14 inches in diameter, and counted about 150 growth rings in it, although I expect that lots of factors contribute to the overall rate of girth increase.

Cheers,

Dod
