Hi all,

Brought a wooden aeroplane kit from Sainsburys on the weekend for my girlfriend's little sister. It was faily simple to make, came with glue and paints. And instructions. Only a fiver.

From looking at this idea, I thought it wouldn't cost much at all to build the kit myself, just a couple of offcuts really. But keeps kids entertained for a few hours, and gets them into wood work!

Just thought I'd let you all know about this!

Wow, I remember getting little kits like that when I was little, always for Christmas or something. You could make lots of different things...........in only I'd actually sit down and take my time at trying to make them

My progression to woodworking was first through Lego, then model airplanes/tanks and then I figured I wanted to create my own things from scratch :D

I have 2 teenage boys. The eldest couldn't care less about woodwork or anything practical, but the youngest has shown an interest. I have bought him a little tool box and some tools from Aldi, and he has a go. The trouble is he does so much other stuff that it is hard to fit the woodworking in. Still, if the seed has been sown...........

I have bought these kits for my grandchildren, they are great. :D

We spent the weekend making helicopters, the paint did get everywhere, even on Iona (the white dog).

Thankfully, the experience for me wasn't so messy!

its a good idea to get them started, when i did woodwork at school it was one lesson cutting something out and 45 lessons sanding it, i suppose it puts plenty of people offf

You're exactly right. I never did woodwork....."Resistant Materials" at GCSE level. But left school and went straight into my apprentiship!

Hated woodwork at school, they made us make things like a shoebrush box, or a flat bit of wood with a coat hanger on it.
Now metalwork  That was great. I once made a hand beaten fancy handled pewter beer mug :eek:ccasion5: Much more useful.

No such thing as woodwork or metalwork when I was at school. It was CDT which was basically a small amount of exposure to lots of different 'crafts' but mainly centred around electronics.

Strangely enough I had the opposite: Metal work was just making a coat hook with a flat back plate. Woodwork was making animals, presentation cases and those pull along toys that bend in the middle.

Im actually doing the last year of my resistant materials GCSE at the moment. It is the only real lesson that i look forward to doing at school, as the other lessons are pretty boring. Even though this is not what got me into woodwork, these lessons and what i learn at home in my workshop is how i learn about woodworking. But to tell the truth i probably learn more at home. :D

Woody.
