I'm 4 years out of university and I can't believe the rubbish trotted out by some 'graduates' with 'degrees' from the 'university of somewhere that didn't have one last year'. I would encourage anyone thinking about going to a university to check very carefully what the net output is, would a degree from this place put me ahead of someone who went and did the job for three years, both financially and practically? Further, the job doesn't finish when you get the certificate, it's only the beginning.

Everywhere has now became a university. and in my area i've been told that in some schools they are having teaching assistants take lessons!, i will not mock education much more as i want to get back into it.

for the last year and a half since i finished my A levels, i have been working full time for my familys business. I have been involved in it since as long as i can remeber. i often work from 7.30 till 6.00, at least 6 days a week. i'm a landscape gardener and a nurseryman. If i want a easy life i would not be a furniture designer/maker. i feel 2-3 years at university would be a very good investment.

Lastly, how independent and organised are you?
. Slainte.

in my work i'm often left to do things on my own. At school, in my last year our technology department had all new staff. i had worked out how i was going to make(construction methods, eg. what tools would i use) my final product. All i asked for help for was to order materials, and on a curicuit board i needed to photo ech. i am mainly a listener, but i'll question if i'm not sure, as if you dont know something, you will never know till you ask.

What's the obsession with calling everything a degree?

Well, a degree is a degree. I don't teach at a university incidentally, but I do run a degree level course at a colllege of art and design.

I don't have a degree myself. The students that leave my course leave with a higher qualification in furniture design and making than I have. I gained a City and Guilds level 3 in furniture studies many moons ago. I have no other furniture related qualifications apart from being a trainee even earlier in my career.

I guess I have one or two other qualities that enable me to teach the subject, eg, a little knowledge gained through a few short years of reasearch, study and practice; and a little experience in the field of furniture design and making. It ain't a degree, but I guess it gets me by, ha, ha. Slainte.
