hi all. new here and looking for some help. i want to make a set of framed ledge & brace gates i was hoping someone may have some plans or drawings to show me of the rebate and the mortice and tenon set up. many thanks dave.

It's a simple construction. T&G boards are usually 12-18mm. Run a rebate up both stiles to suit the boards you have. Also run a rebate along the top rail. The middle and bottom rails should be wide and thinner, so that they will sit flush with the rebate, and the boards can lie on top.

Tennon the top rail, with a hanch. Tennon the middle rail with a double tennon and a haunch in the middle. Tennon the bottom rail, with a double tennon, middle haunch and an end haunch. All tennons should be glued and wedged.

The braces should be the same thickness as the middle and bottom rails. I tend to fix these in using corrugated fastners and glue.

Secret Nail the T&G boards, paint or stain, or whatever finish your hoping for...... just on the tongues and grooves, this means if the boards decide to shrink a little, the gaps don't become unsightly.

Also if your using T&G boards with the V groove, run your router around the door stiles and head, and around the edges of the ends and top of the boards.

I hope all that helps,
Simon.

Hi

Joiner-Sim,

have just signed up for this site.
I have been conevrting old 18th c annex (of my own) and want to make a similar door, though no carpenter. Can you suggest a wood type that will not be too expensive but alos not shrink too much or warp.
It is an external door, but doesn't face extreme weather conditions

Or depending on where you are based and cost, interested in making it?

toto, I've replied to your email. :)

As said in the email, Hemlock is a better choice over softwood, and not much more expensive. Paint grade hardwood is also fairly cheap. Both are suitable timbers.

Hi Daveb,
In case you didn't find any drawings of a F/L & B door.
Be my guest.

I think someone mentioned that the middle and bottom rails are thinner stuff than the rest of the frame, to allow fitting of the T&G boards into the grooves on the top and sides.

Good Luck

:D
