how old is the first one. Are you sure it's the 24oz and not the 28oz?

Caveat;

I discovered a long time ago that Estwing label their hammer weights as total weight of the hammer, whereas most other (and older) hammers are labelled by head weight (i.e. not including handle)

Yeah, I noticed that. I used to have a very old 20oz, which was labelled as a 20. I lost that and got a new 20oz and it was labelled a E (something) 24 or something like that :? Then went onto 24oz and that was the one pictured above. Currently using a 24oz leather handle estwing, which I presume will be labelled in a similar way.

I'm curious to know why the type I use (where the head tapers in a straight line are known as English pattern :?

I'm really tempted to get one of those framing hammers, like the 28oz or 30oz. We normally use paslode framing nailers when doing framing but sometimes its nice to do it the old fashioned way, therapeutic :D
