In the kitchen worktop router bit sets..what is the above used for?... is there a need after cutting the joints... and why 1/4" shank!

i believe its for shaping wood to a template clamped on the top or bottom, by using a bearing. do the cutters not come in all sizes??

It will be for trimming up the edges of the end strips once you have stuck them on

I use one for this but only on the bottom of the top and use a file on the top edge.

It will have a 1/4 shank as a small router is easier for this task.

When covering surfaces with plastic laminates (Formica, for instance), it was practice to leave about 1/16" overhanging the edges on worktops or counters.

Flush-trim, bearing guided cutters were used in small 'one-handed' routers, specifically designed to trim back these edges. In the days of mostly hand tool working, it was a novelty whenever a batch was given me on the 'day-sheet'.

If you are using a trimming cutter in the equivalent of the Elu MOF96, I would advise getting an 8mm collet, and buying 8mm shank cutters. Less vibration, especially when using dovetail jigs. (if you are so inclined!)
