Hi

I've been asked to install new newels, hand rails and spindles to a set of stairs where the original have been cut away and were replaced with, wait for it.......scaffolding poles!

How do you suppose I do this?

The stairs are a single flight, 14 steps, then a return up 3 steps then a further return finishing against a wall. Hope that makes sense.

What do you reckon?

Cheers

Difficult to say without pictures but easiest is to get to you're local supplier and look at the Richard Burgess display and see how it all works.
They do fitting literature and it's a fairly straight foreward job, wost of all being drilling the new hole in the old newel, to accept the large dowel fixing. and getting it all plumb and secure. H T H. Regards Rodders

Reformed this stair a couple of months ago using Richard Burbridge parts fairly straight forward job . Chop newels down drill a 50mm hole with a forsner bit and using PU glue new posts in .I drill a small hole in the side of the remaining post to let the expanding glue escape.Oh i usually cut and fix the handrail to the posts and fit in one as it keeps them from twisting out of square.

Set my chop saws up at the 42 deg angle and the right distance apart and cut them all without having to mark each one.

HTH cheers Bern :)

Well done Bern! Looks really good too.
I do love Richard Burbidge stuff, Doddle to work with.

Cheers for that. Trouble is, the builder has already bought in Howdens parts so no dowel part to the newel bases. I've found 21mm dowel. Will this be ok if I drill a deep hole.....around 120mm both ends? Or can I pick up 50mm dowel somewhere off the shelf?

Lovely work by the way Bern

I wouldn't use a single bit of 20mm dowel personally, I know your gluing the new post to the stub as well but I would feel comfortable with it. If you cant source thicker dowel then maybe some larger diameter metal studding could be glued in instead.

Strangely enough my first thought was if the stub and the base of the new post were both square and the same size then some big dominos would do the job, but I have been sniffing the green stuff a bit hard of late :)

FWIW

Bern, you've done a fantastic job. Do you know the rough cost of materials for that job?? I've got one pretty identical to do for a mate.

I think that Richard Burbidge has dowels already turned on the bottom of the newel turnings that match up with the
various lengths of the square bases that are available, same as the halves etc, square and turned in some different styles.
I don't have much to do with Howdens as they constantly want me to open an account and all I want is the two merchants accounts I have Jewson's and a good Independant, which is where i learnt my trade. go and measure the dowels on Burbidge stuff or make you're own.

Owen just had a look through the invoices and found the mat for this job that was fitted in September . £288 inc vat and that also inc PU glue filler and some gripfill. Labour was 3 days that inc painting the landing cloaking before the spindles were fitted to the main flight .

HTH Cheers Bern.

The Burbridge newels are only £22 plus vat ,i would ask the builder to take the Howden newels back and pick up the burbridge ones . Drilling the end grain of the newel isnt easy you mite end up with some very wonky looking stairs. Have you taken any photos of this scaffolded stairs ? I would love to see them #-o Oh and thanks for complement on my work .

Cheers Bern.

Thanks for that. That price doesn't seem too bad at all. It makes a fantastic difference to the look of the place.
