Hi,

After knocking a crude Fish Tail Chisel From an allen key http://ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/allen-ke ... 40449.html I had a go at making one from some 6mm Ground Flat Stock, its tough stuff to cut I tried using my jigsaw but it was easer to use a Hacksaw, I files it into shape and hardened the fish tail section with my MAPP torch. I made the handle from a branch that I cut from my pear tree a few years ago, and used a lenght of brass pipe for the ferrule.

Its 15mm wide and 200mm long I forgot to temper it before I fited to the handel so I heated the tip up to a straw and quenched it, seems to have worked.

Hi, Rod

It was harder keeping up enough pressure to get the Jigsaw to cut

That looks excellent Pete.

Can you give a quick explanation of the metal shaping process, for those of us considering having a go?

Ed

hi pete

well done , don't it just surprise  you all when you really put your minds to it what we can all actually achieve . nice one pete . hc

Pete

Would you consider making me (I guess others might be interested too) the metal bit so I can handle & final sharpen myself??

I want to pay a proper rate - not mate's rates

It might not be beautiful - but it's cheap and it works :D

I'm about to steepen the angle a bit

Hi, Mr Ed

You just remove all the metal that isn't a fish tailed chisel

Just cut the basic shape out file to the lines and round the edges of the shaft, file the primary bevel and taper the tang, sounds easy but its tough stuff to work with.
I would surgest using the right width ground flat stock to cut down the amount of hacksawing and use a new blade!

Lurker, I will knock you one up, how wide do you want it?

Hi Pete,

I've just re-read this thread as something was niggling away at the old brain. I wonder why you didn't forge the fishtail as you did with the allen key. Was it purely a matter of not being able to get sufficient heat into the metal, or was it to avoid having to harden and re-temper?

Just a question out of interest, as I said earlier a nice job! :)

First up, congrats on a very good looking job that's well finished. However, I've never got fishtail chisels, you don't have to re-grind and hone too many times before you've chewed through your steel.

Not too much of a problem for you as you can re-make your own iron and no doubt enjoy the process, but a problem if you've bought a Blue Spruce or LN

Hi, Ironballs

Its not going to be a well used chisel so I don't expect to ware it away quickly, and if I do I will use it for smaller dovetails.
