Had a bit of time on my hands today(well all afternoon) so I shut myself in the shed, plugged the mp3 player into the stereo and switched on the lathe 8). Three hours later I emerged with this....

My very first hollow form :) I haven't got one of those fancy hollowing tools(yet) so I used my bowl gouge then a round nose scraper on the inside and the outside was done with my spindle gouge. The walls are about 3mm thick and there are a couple of ridges inside(nothing major though) but as I could feel the bark inclusion on the inside I thought it better to stop than have the thing in bits scattered around the shed.
I have no idea what the wood is,it was picked up from outside a nearby house where it had been left with a sign that read "free firewood"(along with some largish ash boughs :D ).
The finish is two coats of danish oil buffed in with a cloth and then a hard wax over the top(more blended in really). Comments/critique appreciated.
cheers JT

Johnny, my expert view on the wood is that it is Timber. What you have made from it is beautyful . It must be a great sense of achivement to find a pice of wood an turn something like that . Well done and thank you for sharing . REgards Boysie

Hi Johnny.

Can't really say much about it, the form looks good, the finish looks great, I like the bark inclusion. I would be very pleased with it.

Nice turning!

PS: No idea what the timber is :-k

That is a really great shape and finnish, it is great to be shut in the shed, did you feel good when you came out? I bet the people in that house would like to see what you did with firewood!!!
Great work keep them coming,

Very 8) Johnny, and you got the wood
for free, what more can i say. :D

Quite a beautiful, elegant shape;finish looks very good, timber colouring and figuring are excellent, and the bark inclusion adds nicely to it :D

Also no idea about the timber :-k - normally, you only get that sort of contrast between heartwood and sapwood with yew or laburnum, and it doesn't really look like either - something more unusual like sumach, maybe ?

Andrew

Well executed Johnny, timber has some resemblance to sumac with it's wide growth rings and pale sapwood.

Thats a cracker, Johnny !
Lovely contrast in the wood - I've not a clue what it is, but its very attractive, and all the better that it was free !

There must have been a wee bit of bravery involved in attempting and executing that, was there ? - you've made a grand job Sir, very pleasing to the eye ! 8) 8) 8)

Very nice indeed. Did you colour the inside? Someturners make a matt black inside to mask any minor imperfections.
I think it looks like laburnum to me.

Thanks for all the replies :D I'm really happy with the piece and its a keeper for sure.
Steve, its about 5 1/2" tall.
Jenx its not bravery more borderline insanity
Nick, no I didn't colour the inside.

As for the timber its not laburnum(wrong bark too light in colour) and its not sumac either, can you actually turn with sumac? I cut one down for a customer a couple of weeks ago and thought it wouldn't be suitable for turning as it looked more like grass fibres inside than wood and the chainsaw ripped the rings up on the sawn logs(would be gutted if its good to turn as I got rid of it).
Anyway as the wife works late on a tuesday I had another little go after work just to make sure the first one wasn't a complete fluke. This time I'm sure its cherry :)
hollow2small003.jpg

I burnt a little ring on the rim and the finish is the same as before(buffed in danish oil with a coat of hard wax blended over)
The inside is a bit ripply but not to bad, I must get one of those fancy hollowing tool/scraper thingys as my round nose scraper is a bit cumbersome in there.

Hi JT
Sumac is OK for turning... if you can find pieces without the central pith

You probably know that the very sticky sap exudes easily eg if you stand it on carpet it will glue itself to it
(you probably sussed it from the residue on the chainsaw blade)

Oh well, a missed oppertunity there #-o Still I'm sure a sucker or two survived so give it a year or two and they'll probably have me back to cut more down
cheers JT

Yep,another excellent piece (and this one does look like cherry 8) )
Again, the overall shape and smooth lines make it look good, and the burnt rim adds nicely to it :D

Andrew

Very nice Johnny,

Love the second piece, would like a foot on the first.

Brilliant work though. How are the wall thicknesses ?
