Spalted beech, friction polish etc etc.....

Now then, i'm familiar with the 2/3rds concept for box's and am wondering if theres a similar ratio i should be following for goblety type things...? :?

I'm sure there must be cos i'm not 100% sure about the height v's diameter ratio of this one.... even tho it's my first go

Cheers guys

That's a fine effort for starters, finish is good and it came off in one piece, what more is needed.

The best thing I find is to browse a selection of fine glass wine glasses and goblets and see which you prefer.
Or choose the ones you most like to use and copy those.

That's what I do when someone comes to me for one to be made, I ask them which pattern they prefer.

Nice piece of work, clean lines and a good profile imho.
Not wishing to hijack your thread but I'm very interested to find out what finish is best to use on goblets as in the past I've used melamine, friction polish and danish oil but they all seem to leave a tang when you use them. Any suggestions??
Cheers,
Mike

I make them for use and coat the inside with melamine using a spray though and putting plenty of thin layers on. Outside I buff with carnuba wax. Never had a complaint about a tang yet so either it works or I have very polite customers LOL.

Main thing with goblets is that the foot should generally be about 2/3rds the diameter of the widest part of the bowl. As Chas's picture shows the other dimensions vary hugely and I have never come across any ratio for them.

Looks like an excellent first attempt - I mean success :)

My only criticism would be that the bowl appears to be rather thicker at the bottom than the top, whereas is should be a fairly even thickness, but I'm being picky now.
