Hi Guys

I started a woodturning course a few months back and have completed a few bowls, to finish them I have been;

1. sand up to 240
2. Apply sanding sealer
3. Flat off with wire wool
4. apply clear wax with wire wool
5. Buff with cotton cloth

Really seems to bring the grain out which i like, however I'm not that keen on the glossy finish, ideally i'd like the same colour / contrast but with a matte / satin finish,

I'll be turning an oak bowl soon a, can anyone recommend a good method to get this finish

Stop at stage 3 or 4 and that should give you the matte finish. Otherwise a danish oil or shellac give a nice finish.

..and don't use wire wool on oak - it reacts with the tannin in the oak,so any tiny bits that come off in use can lead to black stains.There are plenty of synthetic alternatives (e.g. webrax or abranet) that are at least as good.
If you want a matt finish,try Chestnuts lemon oil
