favourite cakes

Hi all

now come on this ain't fair what about all the diabetic here all that lovely sweet sugar, ugh horrible .

well i like all cakes really , but being a diabetic knocks that on the head for me , well not really i do cheat now and again but when i do I'll go along with wizer here .hc

What about us Coeliacs.. Have made and tried many cakes but all taste
rubbish..Whithout the wheat they are pasty and claggy to eat....
Roll on next life & all the beer and cake I can eat...
No cheating here, The wall have eyes and locks on the kitchen cupboards

My wife make a chocolate orange cake that I am sure is suitable for Coeliacs as it has no flour in it. It uses ground almonds and something else. It is one of the Nigela Lawson recipies. It is definitely not claggy, it is so moist it is almost sticky.

I'm rather like Mike and Rob - any kind of fruit cake - the moister and fruitier the better, especially with marzipan on top (but no icing)!!

Unfortunately, like head clansman, I'm now a diabetic, so such a treat has to be very rare these days.

followed by a nice slice of rich fruit cake

While she isn't looking I can tell you guys that my favourite is the LOML's cherry cake. I daren't tell her that though because she will immediately say "What's wrong with my scones then?" or "my Victoria Sponge" etc.etc. Also, if I tell her my favourite then she may stop making the others and, quite honestly I like them all. Not at all keen on shop bought cakes though (except Black Forest Gateau) because you can often taste the preservatives.

Last week I escorted my mum from one hospital to another. She had a pcaked lunch with her, in case she wasn't back by lunchtime. We had a sandwich each, which was pretty unexciting but at least edible, then I opened the prepacked madeira cake. I took a bite and spat it out. It came from ICI rather than a bakery. Never have I tasted something so artificial. Vile.

thing is i'm the original human dustbin - the guy who when served a pudding gets asked " would you like a shovel with that ? " so in fairness to swimbo its hard for her to pin down a favourite, as cake of all forms gets devoured with the same ferocity as a wolf on a kill

My current favourite (without currents) is Triple Ginger cake. I's a ginger sponge with stem ginger, iced with slices of ginger on the top. Yummy, especially after I've preserved my own ginger.

I am going to cop out as I really don't have a favourite, or rather, it depends on my mood.

I love Jamaican ginger cake, my mum makes a fantastic passion cake, my gran used to make the worlds greatest fruit cake (would always make me an individual small one with icing only. I am with Rob on Marzipan ), and last Monday at Chatsworth I had one of the greatest Bakewell tarts my tastebuds have ever encountered.
