Faux wood effect over white gloss

I have a white gloss painted wood framed glass door and frame that I want to change to something like a light oak wood effect. Any suggestions how to do it? eg Do I strip all the white gloss or just paint over it? What paint to use ? What technique? etc

If you google "stain and grain" you should see a method of creating a wood-like finish using scumble.
Also YouTube shows how to scumble a panel on a narrowboat .
