Going back to the original plane - I like it. The handles look like ivory, but I'll bet they feel like wood. The engraving isn't over the top. It's rather in the same vein as the Ultimatum braces and ebony ploughs of old.

I don't think all tools should be so embellished, but why not have one or two 'special' tools? There's no harm at all in taking pride in one's possessions, within limits.

has engraving ever been a feature on commercial planes? I would be surprised if it hasnt, at least at the top end of the market.

I've never seen one advertised in a catalogue - it seems to be restricted to personal flights of fancy and presentation pieces.

Hmm. Those holly handles. They've managed to make wood look almost exactly like plastic.

Each to their own.

Don't be too hard on the holly. Give it about 300 years and it might start to look like this

Very much nicer for the years. Very crisp. I would not look forward to needing to sharpen that ...

As I've said before, moulding planes have a fairly gentle existence compared to stock prep planes.

Certainly not pointless because the the engraver got to do a good and no doubt, satisfying job and second because the new owner got to have something he or she considers to be beautiful. It is not to most modern tastes but in the baroque or rococo periods it would have been considered to be understated. Tastes have always changed over time and will no doubt continue to do so - continued consumption depends upon it!

I'm the opposite, don't like the holly but love the blueing. That and the engraving suggest impracticality to me, more of a display piece, but there's plenty of plane fans on here who seem to have display pieces.
