Weird argument. While it is, if course, deplorable if child labour mines Lithium, Lithium would still be Lithium whatever the mining process was. It might be more expensive, but there's nothing about Lithium that requires it to be mined by children.
We had James from Clevely do our EVs service. Really nice not having to do a 60mile round trip twice to get it serviced instead getting a thorough service at our home. They sure like their MG5s as does a neighbour of ours who does a 100 mile in one every day.

Batteries deteriorate at their highest rate very early on after which the rate of deterioration reduces dramatically. My DIY home battery using EVE cells recorded 1.1% deterioration in the first month, the last 34 months has shown less than 0.2%.
Agreed, so many people make the point that batteries need replacing after 8 years at a huge cost which simply is not the case. BMW i3 has built in buffer at the top and bottom of the battery capacity, the true capacity in my model is 33kWh but it only uses 30 kWh leaving buffers at either end. This allows charging to an indicated 100% but if fact the cells are only around 90% which helps battery life. It also allows the BMS to charge to a slightly higher level as the battery degrades the net result the driver sees very little by way of battery degradation and that is common amongst i3 owners, early cars (2014) are showing little signs of battery deterioration. The i3 battery is made up of Sanyo cells, they have a life of 6000 charge cycles (life is determined when the cell capacity deteriorates to 80%). A charge cycle is from 0 to full, a charge from 25% to 100% would be classed as 0.75 cycles. My i3 averages 130 miles on a full charge. 6000 x 130miles = 780,000 miles in theory at which point the range would have reduced from 130 miles down to 104 miles, still perfectly useable.
Very true, thats local conditions in some countries that use children.

Anyway back to the issue of EV road tax, I've just renewed mine without a reminder by selecting the V5 option on the government website. So that's the middle finger up to Starmer until March '26.

Went in a Toyota taxi the other day. I think it is possibly Level 3 on the car automation scale. Really spooky to watch it driving along behind the vehicle in front, tracking it's speed and braking, following it round the bends, taxi driver itting back with his arms crossed.

Well, given about half the world's lithium comes from Australia, I'd say it's pretty unlikely that child labour is used for that half!

Burning batteries instead. Just watched a Traffic Cops TV prog. Head on crash; EV and 2 passengers destroyed by intense fire, BMW passenger and driver who caused it were unscathed enough to run off.
There's only one Toyota pure EV I can think of that has only just been released in the past year or so. Are you sure you're not thinking of a hybrid? Lots of Prius taxi cabs out there.

You're right they are soulless but they don't leak oil, blow a gasket, smell of fuel, need oil changes every year, rusty exhaust, full of sensors and filters to try and make the filthy dirty exhaust gas cleaner so yes your right and you're being taxed to hell whenever you fill up. I charge my EV with the sun so try and tax that.
Honestly I miss the sound of an engine and I would love an American V8 but it's cost prohibited and Starmer won't let anyone be happy but on the plus side I have saved so much money that for the first time in 20 years I actually have savings.
So I'll take soulless.

It was an Hyundai i20 which is NOT an EV, it did say EV in the program though. Dangerous things these ICE cars with volatile fuel.

Tax the sun? Yep this chancellor will find a way to do that.
A proper old diesel did sound like a tractor, and would smoke like one as well but the modern high reving diesels much less so.
One of those EV's bears little resemblance to the technology of a milkfloat or a scalectrix for that mater and is cramed with complex technology that has to monitor many parameters so unfortunately requires a box of sensors.
Is that before or after they introduce a breathing tax for the oxygen we consume ?
