Finally got round to turning the first of a couple of lovely big chunks of eucalyptus. I don't know why it has such a bad reputation. Sure it ties itself in knots and splits like crazy when drying, but that just adds to the interest and it can have some great colours. First turning, 54 x 12 cm, hoping for 50 x 9 when dried and turned a second time.

Blimy you could bath the baby in that!
Looking good
According to the specs, the lathe will cope with 74cm. I intend to test that if possible...

2 problems with really big stuff: lifting it on as I don't have any kind of winch and where to put it once finished - you would need a mansion for a 70cm fruit bowl which i am sorely lacking!

Due to where I live I have turned a lot of Eucalyptus and while most are very hard and can split when drying a lot of then make great looking turnings. Well worth the effort. You took the right approach rough turning and leaving it to dry. I find leaving the walls on the high side of 25mm its dry in 12 months and ready for the final turn. Its not 100% success rate however so the usual drying rules apply like removing the pith and slow drying not forced. Apart from splitting some warp and you sometimes have to get creative remounting them for the next turn.
Regards
John
