I've had spare Elm left over from my Sideboard and wanted to use it up rather than throw it away and this is what I've managed to make with all the offcuts and leftovers. It's all done with a Domino and at the moment just sitting with the dominos not glued. I still have to profile the top and make a groove for the back panel, plus cut out a space for the bottom shelf. I'm quite pleased with how its come together in a few days of 3 or 4 hrs work. The doors will have mirrors as it's going in a Bathroom. I'll take some more pic's when its done.

That looks fantastic for such a quick job. That would take me at least 4 months :)

I like the panelled sides very much.

Very nice - looking forward to seeing the completed pics.

Would Elm be ok for use in a high humidity area like a bathroom??? I believe that it is not very stable and prone to movement. But I may be talking through my proverbial.....

Cheers

I would have thought that the frame & panel construction would negate the movement issue? I'm hoping thats right, as I have an order from the mrs' for a couple of hardwood bathroom cabs.

I really envy you people who can make furniture of this calibre if I tried something like that I would be trying till the cows came home!
Very nice cabinet will look beautiful when its finnished.

Thank you for the comments, I have had a similar Maple cabinet, with one door in our main bathroom for 2 yrs with no probs, but the Elm moves big time even though not in a damp environment! I'll just wait and see. As far as making this, its quite a simple design, just sized and cut to the correct lengths. The difficult part is the floating panels, if made with flat Mdf or ply I'm sure you could have a go Sooty? Try making one in MDF then paint it, I'll supply all the dimensions for a cutting list if you want? I'm looking for a finish to apply by hand which will suit in a bathroom if anyone has any tips?

I'm currently using a chestnut finishing oil, goes on well, gives a nice clear but slightly warm finish and you can really get a lot of coats on quite quickly, I recommend it on that basis, how it does specifically with humidity, I can't quite say, but it's on my guitar and was assured it's good for that sort of thing..

Like the idea of the mirror as a back panel Paul, have not made the groove to fit said panel so I'll think about that! Still surprised about what can be made with ofcuts and leftovers.

Finished the cabinet today, found some other offcuts to make rear covers for the doors. No help from anyone who looked at my request for handle suggestions in my other post so bought some small knobs from Issac Lord, who also supplied hinges and wall hanging brackets, still really helpful company! The top does not have a big enough overhang, should be another 10mm, but ran out of wood! It also has 2 adjustable shelfs, but they are not in the pic's full of "Cat's Paws"......

A big thanks to Dom Valente for the use of his workshop!

Here are the pic's

The colours are all different, some of the timber was qtr sawn and some not. Also some was from a tree which was a darker brown, the other a paler colour which had some metal in it which had dyed some of the timber Blues, Greens and Blacks. This was made from all the offcuts I did not use to make my other project posted elsewhere. I did offer it free to anyone who wanted it in another post but had to takers, so maybe I'm now glad nobody wanted it!

Thanks for the tip Derek, It's now on the wall and already full. The handles I got look quite nice, I think, with the chrome hinges. Off to Goulden Hardwoods, next week, to buy some timber for a Hall/Console Table, maybe Sycamore with Ebony stringing detail or Oak but cant think of a colour which will look nice as a contrast, perhaps something pale like Boxwood?
