Soon the individual will be unable to do anything for themselves,I went to my local Quarry yesterday with my car and trailer for some 20mm chips got some after some faffing around it turns out after Tuesday cars and trailers are banned from Quarries by the HSE.So once again the small guy gets screwed by stupid rules shoving the price of small quantities to ridiculus prices.

I fully agree with you, but there have been lots of wonky badly covered trailers spewing chippings on the road and cracking screens round here in sunny Devon.
So we all will be getting bagged stuff from now and at more expense!
Regards Rodders

I suspect its something to do with keeping quarry vehicles and pedestrians separated. People tend to lose out big time in any accident with quarry vehicles. Not sure where Tuesday fits in but some do talk BS at times. http://www.hse.gov.uk/workplacetransport/separating.htm

If the quarry has a mind to it should still be able to sell to the public just design the layout to keep the people away from quarry vehicles, it shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to solve.

Well with present rules you are not susposed to get out of your car anyway

That's the type of thing I'm talking about, keeps pedestrians safe.

Assuming that the rule is complied with and people do not get out of their car I suspect the quarries approach has nothing to do with HSE, and more probably to do with the quarry not wanting to be bothered with small uneconomic, for them, orders.

I think it highly unlikely that the HSE have 'banned' cars and trailers from your local quarry!

Far more likely that the quarry have decided the insurance risk is to high so have decided to 'reduce' the risk by preventing access. The pedestrain separation has been an 'issue' since rhe workplace regs came out in 1992.

Still, - wouldn't want the truth to get in the way of a H&S bashing story would we!

....Not sure where Tuesday fits ....

I suspect the rule is in place from 1st April which is Wednesday.

That would be the start of the new financial year in local govt.
Further convinces me that its either a new sales policy or an insurance issue.
And nothing to do with HSE

I agree.
You would be very surprised how little HSE actually ban.

HSE is often an excuse to save having to explain a more complicated issue.
As already suggested it could be a number of things, insurers calling it out, maybe not worth their while dealing with the public, a recent incident has made them review their policy etc
A local scrap dealer used to let people wander round their yard on Saturdays, while huge cranes threw steel around. Made me feel very nervous being near them. They've now stopped allowing public access but another yard a bit further away lets people in at any time.

Most enjoyable way to spend an hour or two, wandering around picking through other peoples rubbish, I highly recommend it :)

Part of my job involves keeping up to date with HSE legislation and I get regular bulletins from the HSE listing any updates including loads of things not relevant to me. I have had nothing on this and had a look online.
This site http://www.safequarry.com/Public_Safety.aspx doesn't mention it so could it be, yet another, rumour or misunderstanding?

Update went to my other local quarry today no problem with car and trailer so its just the council imposing rules and blaming health and safety they also lied to me by saying all quarrys were banning cars

That's what we were trying to tell you!

Local authorities (councils) are the worst for this.
