Off up to Edinburgh this coming weekend to take all my sons assorted Uni gear (guitars, amps, posters/pics of varying degrees of acceptability etc, etc). Any one recommend any good tool or woodie orientated establishments worth a perusal? - Rob

Murray's Tool Store in Morrison Street is an old-established shop and well worth a visit. Whilst it's reasonably small, it's packed full of stuff, including a large collection of new and second-hand hand tools. It's the sort of place where you could spend the afternoon rummaging through their bins! They don't have much machinery (not enough room), but they are a Panasonic cordless dealer. They'd be as happy to sell you one small drill bit in a peculiar size as they would be to sell you a standard set. On-street parking is difficult, but there is a public carpark opposite. They also have another smaller branch in South Clerk Street. See http://www.allinedinburgh.co.uk/directory/1142/7560.php and http://www.allinedinburgh.co.uk/directory/1142/6885.php

For machinery and power tools, TSC (The Saw Centre) at nearby Haymarket is worth a look. They have a lot of DeWalt, Bosch, Makita etc. Their opening times are a bit limited, and I don't know if they are open on Saturdays. Parking is quite easy at meters in the side streets, or free during certain hours on the main road if you walk two or three hundred yards. See http://www.allinedinburgh.co.uk/directory/1142/7686.php

There's also a Machine Mart and B&Q Warehouse in the East of the city, but you can get these anywhere.

Thank you. I've been lurking for a few months, but since the query about my home city had no replies, I decided to poke my head over the parapet.

Tools, books, and computers - that's where most of my money goes. I have a very long wish list, with a Festool TS55 saw and guide rails near the top, quickly followed by a Bosch GBS 75AE Sander.

Ah well, maybe for Christmas... :)
