After not using Ebay for 6 years. I have just sold a lathe. The person wants to come and pick it up.
However when I log onto Ebay it states that I am waiting payment. Should be paid by Paypal. Don't want to mess the bloke about. I have asked him twice as to whether he has paid , no answer so far. He was the only bidder was wondering if he is trying to either back out or on a fiddle.
Thanks for any help

Can't see a scam here. He might have cold feet and might be backing out, that's not a scam. Report this to eBay so you get your sale fees back. I would't accept Paypal for a collected item

To pre-empt the question, because allowing collection of an item paid for by PayPal is inviting fraud.

They stroll away with the item, claim not to have received it and the payment can be clawed back. Plus you get to pay some extra fees for the privilege.

It could well be that he has not paid yet because he is bringing cash which, as has been said, is the only acceptable way when collecting an item. Give him a day or two to reply as not everyone uses the internet everyday.

Give him a few days to pay or get a reply to agree payment on collection. Decide on a time limit and tell him if it isnt paid by a set date you will re-list.

Just make sure it's either cash on collection or if he wants to use PayPal then he must have it delivered, (at extra cost of course), so can be tracked with signature on delivery as per eBay/PayPal's requirements to protect both parties.

Have him bring proof of identity with him for collection (passport and copy number) , copy this and also photograph him and have him sign for the item with a witness. also photo the vehicle being loaded and licence number. May not prevent fraud attempts but is proof of collection for paypal

Ask for cash on collection; that's how I do it with large items
You should have the name and address of buyer

Next Monday a man down South will be making a 450 mile round trip to collect 2 items that he will pay £70 for
Just the going rate for the goods

I'm sure I read somewhere that Paypal is not recommended for collection

Ditto the 'be wary of paypal and collections.....

Cash can also have its downsides too believe it or not..!!

You dont say how much it sold for, but if i was you i would VERY QUICKLY invest in one of the pens that can detect if the notes are real or not.

My missus used to work part time for Sainsbo's on the check-outs, and they were all given pens to check £20 & £50 notes, and she said it was surprising just how frequently fakes were passed.

We sold a cooker a few years ago via ebay for £540, asked for cash on collection, and we said to the buyer we were going to check the notes (with her present) using one of these pens, she was just as curious as us and had no problem with it, and as it happened everything was fine.... but as they say "Better safe than sorry"

Is this not just a casevof ebays automated payment request and it's preference for paypal?

It says you are awaiting payment because you are in fact awaiting payment.
Anything i collect or sell for collection i would expect to be a C. O. D. transaction.

Once it's been collected and paid for just mark it as paid.

Quite right too Water-Mark

My sale of items awaiting collection are exactly ditto

I'm sure I read that sellers are now obliged to accept paypal for most categories of goods sold on ebay. However that does not prevent the seller from putting 'no paypal' in the listing, even if it infringes ebay policy.

Hi Droogs
I have sent you a PM

Just curious, but had an odd EBay experience a couple of weeks back. Bid on and won a set of laser toners for my printer at a reasonable, but not brilliant price. Paid PayPal, nothing appeared even though a likely delivery date was given in the original listing. Emailed seller, no response, so set up dispute via EBay. Money has reappeared in PayPal a/c, so seems OK, but why did seller put the stuff up if had no intention to supply? Could the money still disappear?

Did it come through as a refund or a new payment?

If somebody asked me to do this i'd assume it was a scam of some sort.
You'd need to list all of that in the listing prior to the sale to be taken seriously.

If someone asked me ti provide a copy of my passport and insisted in taking photos of me, distribution of which I cannot control, I would walk straight away. The last thing anyone needs is risk of ID theft.

I have made this point before: for large sums CHAPS is safe. Cash is not unless you deposit it in the bank and get a paying in receipt before the buyer leaves with the goods. I had not thought about the PayPal aspect someone referred to above when you collect goods. I shall remember that!
