Hi all

Been quiet on the turning front for a while, but this month's club competition was an earring stand. I wasn't really feeling it until I realised that really it's a finial box on a stem, which I've been wanting to have a go at making anyway! Photo not great - must make a light box to show it off better!

I guess regardless of club decisions there will be someone else in the household that will think not all your time in the shed is wasted after all.

Just a thought, next one do a simpler finial shape with bulbous base and gentle curve to the top rather than stem beads, it will then be a simple repository for the odd dress ring that's worn to go with the earrings.

Stewart, there's some very good skills here. If it reflects the vision in your imagination and you enjoyed the making, it is a total success. I hope it was well received at your club.
If I may, it would look even better on a simpler background without flash. I use an LED flood and my desk lamp - works OK if your camera has WB compensation.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. Much appreciated. I've been trying to reply all day but keep getting an sql error. Keeping this short to see if it works!

Hmm....ok will try my longer post again....

Thanks for the feedback and comments. I went for something perhaps a little more elaborate because I wanted to do well in the competition. It worked as I came first out of eleven entries. Very pleased. The finial is supposed to reflect the stem but be finer in diameter. I was pleased with the way the stem and the finial work together with a tapering to the top. Also put a light box of sorts together with four sheets of opaque acrylic. I used a variety of lights and am now part way making some with halogen downlighters I've had in the shed for fifteen years or more! Getting some daylight low wattage led bulbs for them. ...and I'll add the photos after this one if it works...
