I'm also having dust extraction problems and have been reading up and surfing the net for advice. The conclusion I came to (not least of all because of Bill Pentz!) was that the only real solution was a cyclone, with a lot of power and large diameter pipes. Yet noone has even breeched the subject here! Am I missing something?
If you have a few spare hours you might want to check this out Tom: http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm

The dust extraction debate has been raised a fair few times on this forum mate, including and mainly featuring cyclones and Bill Pentz' research on the subject. I think it's probably not been mentioned in this thread as people don't want to go over old ground again, like whenever someone raises THE question about which type of method to use to hone their tools with (though I could be wrong). Maybe there should be a sticky on it, but there is so much info and no defining single answer.

Cheers _Dan :)

Stable,
Sounds like the message hit home. I was trying to get you to think about working "IN" the business...doing all the hard graft and also about working "ON" the business...finding other cheaper or better ways to work. Its really good that your thinking about it.

The suggestion to compare notes with another company which is in a slightly different business is a great one.

The idea to go and chat to the machine suppliers was also aimed at you trying to find some other companies which may have similar problems.

Interested to see your web site also.

Good luck
Alan

Alan's advice is very sound.

I have 17 years experience of self employment and I am still always looking at how I can make things easier and more profitable.

Any business that does not do this will eventually fail as the competition will out preform them, machines and tools are always being developed and while sometimes you may think that I have managed with this or that machine, it may be that upgrading some equipment and looking at your supply chain will make you more money, even though in the short term you will have to pay out.

You can see my (or beginning of) new site here...

Running the whole show including hire side / promotion / commission / accounts means site development has taken a hit and the old site is drastically out of date. But work keeps on coming so haven't been in any rush.

It's odd to primarily have started as a manufacturing business that i'm now looking at outsourcing and only 3 years in. But there's a good reason why there is only a handful of PA manufacturers based and manufacturing their own products in the UK.

I bought the 3M 6051 A1 Gas Filter and P3r particle filter combo last week. 2 days in seems better - fingers crossed. Still manically trying to find a decent dust extractor before I start my next project.
