I think we've all been pretty horrified at the events in Norway, but I only realised a moment ago that the shooter was using dum-dum bullets. That he could have gone on such a rampage goes beyond the bounds of credibility but to use that sort of round is indefensible. He's been stuffed into solitary for the next few weeks...I'd like to see him left there for the next twenty years - Rob

Under Norwegian law, the maximum amount of time that he can stay banged up is 21 years (or so I read t'other day) which means that if he did the whole term he'd be 53 when he got out - Rob

When I mentioned this to SWIMBO she said that was the max sentence anybody in Norway had recd so far so could be more?
However this was gleaned from the Daily Mail reprinted in Florida that we find in our drive each morning?

The maximum jail sentence is 21 years. If at the end of the sentence the person is still believed to be a risk then they get another 5 years, the only limit on the amount of times another 5 years can be given is the prisoner dying of old age. Just an odd quirk of Norwegian law.

Under Norwegian law the maximum prison sentence anyone can receive is life in prison which is 21 years.
We have, however, ratified the laws from the EU (?) on war crimes and crimes against humanity which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years.
If they dare to try something like that in a high- profile case like this...
He can, however, be judged to something called "containment" which means he can be kept indefinitely. (Although the containment will be reviewed by a judicial board every 5 years minimum which is the least amount of containment one can receive at the time.)

As for "Dum dum", it's a layman term which is generally used to describe some form of expanding bullet. The initial reports suggests he used some sort of frangible bullet, which doesn't expand but instead splinters into a lot of small fragments. All of this is based on a surgeons ideas and not someone who is familiar with guns and i expect the truth about this to surface eventually. It would be a lot less dead people on the island if he'd used full metal jacket bullets, though, so i expect it to not be that.

I read about the containment thing Henning, apparently you can be detained for as long as you are deemed to be a risk. For the rest of his natural in this nut jobs case

I would hazard a guess that in this particular case that will be used to it's absolute maximum.

Isn't the death sentence appropriate in this instance?

It is to me what ever anyone else says.

I used to be a stern believer in capital punishment, but having tried my head on some thinking about what risks are involved with a death sentence, I don't believe in it any more. Norway has a separate law for military personnel which had death sentence until just a few years ago, but now even that is no longer the case. So even for treason and deserting in times of war you won't get death. ( Caveat: there may be some exceptions which I don't know as I have no particular knowledge about the law, just a general understanding)

Thinking about it, this ensures no innocent person would be killed by the state, which can only be a good thing IMO.

"Dum dum", how very apt woodenbloke, showing even a modicum of sensitivety is a nack you just dont have :?
What is it with you bjw? :? You appear to have the idiotic knack of misinterpreting almost everything I type, which is getting to be a tad irritating. If you can't add anything of use to a conversation except to snipe at me, then please do just shut up!...and if you can't get my UKW name correct, there may be some derivations on yours that could be explored.

For your information, Henning has provided us with a far more accurate description of the type of round used (dum-dum I accept, isn't strictly accurate)

I still find it totally mind numbing that an individual could go to such cold blooded lengths to commit an act like this...appanently nine years  in the planning - Rob

The death penalty provides an all too easy way out for people like this, their 'suffering', if any, becomes very short lived. They should be locked away for the rest of their life, without privileges or any form of what many may consider 'luxuries' and to hell with 'their human rights'. It makes my blood boil when I hear of people like this who are locked away for vile acts only to be given opportunities that many decent people can only dream of.

When the trial is over, I have no doubt there will be an investigation in to his background.

I would expect the man came from a family of good repute but was brought up not getting any punishment when he committed misdemeanors because the parents thought they were raising a lovely child. That is a case of spare the rod and spoil the child which is the daft method of parenting these days. (alright not literally)

Bugbear, another death would help by permanently removing this mad dog from the face of the earth. In a few years time the 'do-gooders' will be yelling for his release just as they did for Hindley. Top him now and save Norway the trouble and expense of keeping him and the possibility of him being released to do the same again!

If any other kind of mammal goes mad and on a killing spree it is put down, so why not this mammal?
