hi , just bought my first lathe (2nd hand from flea market) £20 , now it does work (after fiddling with the drive belt tension , it has drill style chuck so i was wondering what kind of drive spur would work best i have no idea about tapers etc .
the lathe itself has no brand name on it and is a single speed , so i dont know what rpm it runs at

any help at all would be gratefully appreciated

Are you able to post a photo of it? One of the whole thing, one of the headstock closeup and one of the tailstock. I'd be much easier if we can see what you're talking about.

i will grab a few pics today and up them later

hi Bear
Please take this in the spirit of goodwill but...
and I may be completely wrong (someone please shoot me down if i am) but I would guess that what you have there is a homemade lathe and would by the looks of it be unsuitable for turning anything bigger than a pen. you are unlikely to get any tools or attachments to make it more useful. The jacobs chuck is not really suited to holding anything other than drill bits and would be unsafe trying to hold wood bigger than dowelling. I would kindly suggest that if you value your fingers, eyes and other easily injured bodily parts you may wish to find another lathe with which to start turning. Sorry.
Have a look for maybe record power, perform , arundel, coronet elf amongst others that can be found on certain internet auction sites sometimes rather inexpensively because they tend to be a tad heavy for posting.

hi Nev , thanks for the reply, just one of those cases , i seen it i bought it lo (especially at £20)l , gonna stick it on ebay n see if i can sell it , then try n get myself a cheap proper lathe
many thanks for the advic

What Nev said is quite right about using a Jacob's chuck. But if you did want to change it, there are only two ways it could have been fitted. The better option would be with a tapered spike (a quill) on the back of the chuck. If the drive shaft is hollow this may be what you have. If so you should be able to knock the chuck and quill out by inserting a suitable length of metal rod or wooden dowel in the hole at the back of the pulley and giving it a sharp tap.
You then need to find out what Morse Taper your quill is and buy a matching drive centre.

If that does not work then your chuck must be threaded on to the shaft (ordinary clockwise thread) and can be undone by putting a big Allen key in the jaws, tightening up then knocking the free end of the key with a hammer to rotate it.

Your chance of getting anything else to fit would be nil.

But if you do use it please build a guard for the exposed belt and pulleys.

thanks andy
there was a cover on the belt pullys , but had to remove it as the belt jumped from the pullys, it was rivets together, ok just had a look at the chuck system and the jacobs/drill chuck is screwed on
