Drilling on the Lathe

Hi
I need to drill holes in some of the pieces that I am turning, but after looking at the Axminster catalogue I am confused to say the least. They advertise three different chucks, but which is best and how are they attached to the tailstock? Do I need to puchase an arbour as well as a chuck and what is the significance of JT3 and JT6 arbours? I would greatly appreciate any advice and guidance.

You will need an abour to suit the taper in your head stock which will likely be a "morse" taper MT1, MT2, MT3, etc. the other end of this arbor will have another taper to take the chosen chuck JT1, JT2, etc.

Your safest bet is to buy one of the chucks that comes complete with arbour, that way you only have to worry about your headstock taper.

If you plan to drill long holes in lamp standards for example then you will need a hollow centreand suitable auger.

Hi Neville,

Jason is right its much easier to buy the chuck and arbour together. I managed for a long while drilling with morse taper drills that fitted direct into the tailstock but recently got one of these http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp? ... f_id=21238
about £20 iirc and I'm very happy with it.
