bash- what bash? i have to apply for my pass early yer know

I use a devil stone on my white wheel every day i use it. I have had 3 wheels in 11 years. 1 white 1 ruby and my current white one -the ruby was the worst one.

I have the record 8" grinder and have the supplied wide white wheel on one end and a pink wheel on the other.

I clean them as needed which could be once or twice a day depending on what I am doing.

I use both a devil stone and the T diamond dresser, I prefer the diamond one.

There is a known problem with both the 6" & 8" grinders I suggest you email Record about the problem, all those I have heard of who had problems and have contacted have had a speedy resolution to it.

8) Thanks John ... may well do that too ( in addition to Chas's pointers ) as I must say I'm a wee bit miffed that the thing isn't quite up to snuff straight out the £68 quid box.
You'd think they'd have put out a product recall to their distributors, eh ?
My impression of record is that they are a good quality company, and to be fair, anyone can have a hiccup on something..
Thanks again for that too .

I stand to be corrected on this, but I believe Record now act as tool retailers and I don't think they make a lot of their machines these days. Years ago they cast and machined all their own lathe castings, and forged their own tools. Does anyone know if the still do this?

As far as I am aware most of their machines, not Nova, are made in China. Although they now have in place a very stringent quality control system to make sure they are up to the standard, or better, of the Sheffield made ones.

I am not sure where the hand tools are made now though.

One other thing that Record have said about the grinder is with regards to cleaning/truing the wheels.

They suggest that the best results are obtained by starting the procedure to the side of the wheel and moving the dresser across from left to right or right to left.

Put the dresser on the left side just on the wheel and at a slight angle of a couple of degrees then move it from left to right.

The angle of the dresser should only be literally 1 or 2 degrees.

According to Record the reason for doing it this way is it eliminates any slight bumps on the surface of the stone and makes sharpening easier.

Like everything it takes a bit of practise and I must admit that I have found it easier to keep the wheel round and in ballance and get sharper tools since doing this.

The difference is easy to tell when sharpening, the tool runs smoother on the grinder and quieter.

The cardboard is on there to protect the stone. Without it there is a possibility when tightening the steel washer you can crack the wheel.
If it isn't noticed, it could explode after startup which could get uncomfortable. If the card gets torn or worn replace the card.

UPDATE :

Having tried what Chas suggested, -- and still not eliminated the problem, I then contacted Record Power via their website.

You have to 'register' on their site ( many of you may already know that ), and give details on a 'feedback' form.
. That was done yesterday.

not 24 Hours later - ( this morning ) - I have had a phonecall from a pleasant gent at Record Power, Mr Tony Rhodes ...
very apologetic for the problems I've had, arranging to collect the grinder at their cost, take it back to Record, and replace it completey FoC, for a new one.
He doesn't even want the original receipt from where I actually purchased the machine.

No quibble, no question - its a "New Replacement" offer straight away.

That is pretty good aftersales backup in my book ( if only everything in life were that good   ).
I couldn't have asked for, or expected any more or any better than that... that's a company thats standing squarely behind its product and its reputation, at least thus far, anyway.
So.. pretty impressed with Record Power, i have to say.
Their 'Feedback' system online clearly works.

Here's hoping a replacement machine is reasonably quick to arrive, and that when it does, it works perfectly.
I'm sure that, assuming the replacement is 100% Functional, the machine itself would be more than capable of doing everything I'm likely to ask of it.

We'll see how it unfolds ...
but certainly so far.... all is looking very positive. :)

Latest : : They came and picked it up today.. exactly as promised, -- Will advise on how the outcome unfolds... :)

18/02/09 Latest - Phoned Record and asked 'how things were progressing' ... they've not looked at it yet. Oh No, the "good vibes" from it originally are slipping ! . Fair enough in some respects.. I'm hardly the No#1 Priority.
However - some good to report. What i didn't mention before is.. whilst on the hunt to 'get' the Record Grinder.. i was in at the local place (Grampian Power Tools), to see if Mike in there had one. - He said " Go up the stairs yourself, there's a 'faulty' one up there, been there a while.. Help yourself, and knowing you - you'll haul it to bits and fix it, so its yours - take it, FoC.. now go away and let me deal with my 'real' customers'' ... So, in like a shot.. grabbed the 'faulty' one and it was in the boot of my car till yesterday, when I remembered about it.
( its a 1992 one, the blue and yellow version, but essentially the same machine.. badged as RECORD SELECT RSBG8 ).. all spec's exactly the same.
A quick "once over" revealed the 'fault' was a missing white stone ! thats all ! -- so, on the phone yesterday to DM Tools, down the road in Englandshire.. wheel ordered... half 10 today, its HERE !! Now thats helluva good service, ... so, Inspired by Johnny's Oak bowl of today.. I'm off to cut cardboard washers, fit it on, and get it running.
Scores on the doors as of today then : (out of 10)
DM Tools - 10
Grampian Power Tools - 10
Me - 4 ( for forgetting about the one in the boot )
Record Power - 7, but can recover well, if they get something to happen in the next few days. - Started good.. floundering a little mid-course, but could put in a strong finish yet.. we'll see

Sorry to 'bore' but given one or two have similar problems with similar machines.. it may prove helpful at some point to someone.
